Records Fall Saturday at Minnesota Invite

12/3/2022 10:59:00 PM | Men's Swimming & Diving, Women's Swimming & Diving

MINNEAPOLIS A pair of records went down Saturday night as the Minnesota Invite wrapped up its short course yards (SCY) events at Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.

The 200 fly was involved in each as Minnesota freshman Summer Schmit twice broke a Para American record, while junior Kaiser Neverman rewrote the Minnesota record books in the event.

A member of the U.S. Paralympic Team, Schmit was born with congenital disarticulation of the right wrist and has no right hand; she competes in the S9, SB9, SM9 classification. In Saturday's prelims, she broke her own Para American record in the 200 fly by .19 with a time of 2:16.63.

Saturday night, Schmit returned to the pool as the lone swimmer in the 'D' final of the event. With all eight teams in the field and their fans cheering her on, Schmit smashed the record once more, this time taking 2.15 seconds off it and lowering the mark to 2:14.48.

"It felt really good," Schmit said of her performance in the prelims. "I definitely gave my all, but coming back for finals I was really hoping I'd be able to drop it one more time just because of how good things felt. I didn't think I'd drop it by two seconds, but I hoped. I was actually talking to my sister and she said she thought I'd go 2:14 tonight, and I ended up going that so I'm super happy."

Neverman, meanwhile, tallied his third school record of the Invite and his second as an individual with his effort in the 'A' final of the 200 fly.

Having already been a part of the 800 free relay and the 200 IM records this week, Neverman posted an NCAA provisional cut of 1:42.96 to etch his name once again in the record books. His mark bested that of Kyler Van Swol, who same the event in 1:43.37 at the 2014 NCAA Championships.

All told, Minnesota swimmers logged 17 NCAA 'B' cuts and 27 personal records on the day. Over the course of the Invite, the Golden Gophers amassed nearly 60 'B' cuts and 75 personal records over four days.

Another highlight Saturday saw all three men competing in the 1650 free (William Christenson, Chris Nagy and Bar Soloveychik) hitting personal records and 'B' cuts in the event.

In addition, diving took to the platform for the first time this season and freshman Drew Bennett notched his second victory of the weekend. His score of 343.50 was nearly 20 points ahead of the competition.

The Minnesota Invite concludes Sunday with long course meters (LCM) Olympic Time Trials.
