Gophers Put Down Panthers, Advance to Sweet 16

12/3/2022 8:57:00 PM | Volleyball

Carter Booth posted 10 blocks to lead the 'U'

MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 8 Minnesota Golden Gophers volleyball team defeated the Northern Iowa Panthers in straight sets, 25-18, 25-16, 25-15 on Saturday evening at Maturi Pavilion. With the win, Minnesota advances to the Sweet 16 for the eighth straight season and the 10th time in head coach Hugh McCutheon's tenure.

"At the beginning of the match, it was a handful," said head coach Hugh McCutcheon. "They were hitting .529 through the first media timeout and it was on. To our athletes' credit, they hung in there and kept playing good Gopher volleyball. We're obviously very happy to be advancing."

Taylor Landfair paced the Gophers with 11 kills while Carter Booth had six kills and 11 blocks. Melani Shaffmaster ran the offense efficiently, posting 25 assists to go with three kills and five digs.

"Rachel Kilkelly came in and had some awesome serves that helped knock them out of system and we were able to go on a run in the first set," said CC McGraw. "Defensively, we cleaned some stuff up with our blocking and we made adjustments that helped put us in better positions to win."

As a team, Minnesota (22-8, 15-5 Big Ten) hit .288 with 33 kills, 16 team blocks, 29 digs and four aces. Northern Iowa (27-8, 17-1 Missouri Valley) hit .056 with 34 kills, three team blocks, 34 digs and one ace.

Emily Holterhaus led Northern Iowa with 11 kills.

Set Breakdown:
Set 1: Minnesota scored three of the first four, getting two kills from Taylor Landfair and an ace from Elise McGhie. Northern Iowa responded by scoring six of the next seven to take a 7-4 lead, getting four kills and a 'U' attacking error. A kill from Landfair and a block from Melani Shaffmaster and Carter Booth brought it back to a 7-6 UNI advantage. The lead for UNI would exchange between one and two points up until the media timeout, when the Panthers took a 15-13 lead into the break. The Gophers came out with some fire after the break, tallying four of the next five to force a Panthers timeout. Mckenna Wucherer posted two kills and UNI had two attacking errors to give Minnesota its first lead since 3-2. An ace from Rachel Kilkelly, a kill from Arica Davis and another attacking error put the 'U' up 20-16, causing the Panthers to call timeout No. 2 after a 6-0 run. After a kill from UNI, Landfair posted a kill and a block with Booth before a Booth kill helped put Minnesota up 24-17. The Gophers would finish the set with a 25-18 win. Minnesota hit .500 for the set compared to .273 for Northern Iowa. Landfair had five kills while Booth and Wucherer had four to lead the 'U.'

Set 2: The Gophers picked up where they left off in set one, scoring six of the first seven before the Panthers took their first timeout. Booth and Landfair had kills while Wucherer had two in the spurt. UNI scored consecutive points after the timeout before Minnesota answered with five straight to go up 11-3, forcing timeout No. 2 from UNI. Kills from Wenaas and Landfair helped Minnesota take a set-high nine-point lead at 14-5. The teams exchanged points until the Panthers had a 3-0 spurt to cut an 18-9 deficit to six at 18-12. The Panthers would get no closer the rest of the way as Minnesota closed out the second set, 25-16. Wenaas had two blocks late to help seal the deal and put the Gophers up 2-0.

Set 3: Minnesota came out strong again in the third and final set, tallying six of the first eight before UNI called a timeout. Three blocks combined with ace No. 2 of the night from Elise McGhie got the Gophers going. Minnesota doubled its lead to eight at 13-5 before the next Panthers timeout. Booth and Wucherer had a block and Shaffmaster had an ace and a kill in the spurt. UNI scored the next point before a 4-0 Minnesota run put the set out of reach at 17-6. A block from Landfair and Booth combined with a UNI attacking error put the Gophers up 13 at 20-7. UNI Made a late run before the Gophers closed it out, 25-15, with two kills from Landfair and one from Shaffmaster.
