Heise’s Five-Point Game Lifts Gophers to Series Sweep

12/3/2022 6:22:00 PM | Women's Hockey

Forward Taylor Heise contributed to five-of-six goals in a shutout win in Mankato.

MANKATO, Minn. – The No. 5 Golden Gopher women's hockey team picked up its fifth conference sweep of the season after a 6-0 win over Minnesota State on Saturday afternoon at Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center in Mankato, Minn.

Unlike Friday, it was Minnesota (12-3-2) that lit the lamp first after Taylor Heise converted a shorthanded breakaway 4:55 into game two. The Gophers added two more in the second period thanks to Heise's second of the game and Abbey Murphy's second shorthanded goal of the season. For the second-straight game Abigail Boreen scored a pair of goals after finding the back of the net twice in a 24 second span in the third period. Ella Huber tipped in a point shot for her sixth goal of the season with 15 seconds left in regulation. Minnesota State (7-9-0) failed to get on the board in Minnesota's third shutout of the season.

Skylar Vetter started in goal for the 13th straight game and earned her third-career shutout by making 14 saves. Minnesota State's Alexa Berg made 44 saves in the defeat.

Quotable
"A great game today to finish off the sweep," said head coach Brad Frost. "Skylar Vetter played really well in net. Our power play and penalty kill were huge with two shorties and a couple on the power play. Some really good things overall and some momentum heading into the last series before the holiday break."

Notable
•    Taylor Heise moves into a tie with Natalie Darwitz for the fifth-most shorthanded goals in program history (7).
•    Heise's first period goal was the 19th game-winning goal of her career – the sixth most in program history.
•    Heise matched a career-high five points (2g-3a) in the win (last vs. RIT on Nov. 12, 2021)
•    Both of Skylar Vetter's shutouts this season have come against the Mavericks in Mankato.
•    Allie Franco recorded her first career point with an assist on Ella Huber's goal.
