Braun Honored by Big Ten For Second Time

Braun has been named the Freshman of the Week twice this season.
MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota guard Mara Braun has been named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the second time, the conference announced Monday.
The Wayzata, Minn., native set a new Minnesota record for points in a Big Ten debut with 26 in a comeback win over Penn State and in two games averaged 26.5 points per game, 3.0 assists, 3.0 steals and 2.5 rebounds while shooting 51.6 percent from the floor and hitting six threes.
On Saturday Braun hit 11-of-11 free throws against Penn State, becoming just one of 24th Gopher to connect on 10 or more free throws in a game and make them all (11-of-11). She led Minnesota to two second-half comebacks this past week, overcoming a 10-point deficit to defeat Penn State in double overtime and helping the Gophers tie the game with 19 seconds left against Wake Forest.
Minnesota's double overtime victory over Penn State was the first of its kind for the program since 2020 in a 73-71 victory over Rutgers. Braun scored seven of Minnesota's 22 overtime points against the Nittany Lions and Braun scored 18 of her 26 points in the second half or in overtime. Braun's clutch moment of the night came at the end of regulation where she hit three straight free throws to tie the game with 13 seconds to go and help force overtime. Braun also was the primary on-ball defender during Penn State's final possession in double overtime that sealed the victory at Williams Arena.
Against Wake Forest she scored 13 of her 27 points in the fourth quarter and scored 18 in the second half. Braun is one of just three players in the Big Ten to average over 20 ppg, and ranks third overall at 20.6 this season.
The honor for Braun is the third overall for the Gophers this season with Braun winning the honor twice and Mallory Heyer once.
