Gophers Close Weekend with 7-3 Win over Fresno State

Dray's homer seals win; Jensen, Dowell reach base four times
ORLANDO, Fla. - Ellee Jensen and Makenna Dowell each reached base four times leading the Minnesota softball team to a 7-3 over Fresno State, a team receiving votes, closing The CFX Classic Sunday morning in Orlando, Fla.

In a rematch of an elimination game at the 2021 NCAA Los Angeles Regional, Jensen scored twice and Dowell tallied two RBI for the Gophers (3-2). Megan Dray hit a late, three-run home run securing a winning weekend to begin the season.

The Bulldogs got three-straight singles with two outs in the first to get on the board. Minnesota wasted no time answering back as Jensen dropped down a bunt and later scored as Dowell laced a two-out single to right tying the game, 1-1.

After back-to-back Fresno State errors with one out in the second, Jensen loaded the bases on another bunt single, but the Gophers failed to break through. The defensive momentum stayed with the Bulldogs as they moved back in front, 2-1, hitting a solo home run opening the third. Natalie DenHartog and Dowell delivered consecutive doubles beginning the bottom of the frame to erase the deficit.

A two-out RBI single in the fourth gave the Bulldogs the lead again, 3-2, only to see Minnesota answer back immediately. Sydney Strelow walked and Jensen bunted for her third single of the morning. Strelow came around to score thanks to an error and DenHartog added a sacrifice fly pushing the Gophers to a 4-3 advantage.

Autumn Pease entered in relief for the fifth and retired the side in order. Kayla Chavez ripped the team's first triple of the year in the fifth, but Minnesota left the bases loaded as the lead remained at one. Megan Dray capped the day with force as she crushed a three-run home run to left in the sixth and the Gophers closed out the win, 7-3.

Emily Leavitt picked up the win throwing 4.0 innings and gave up three runs on eight hits. Pease recorded the save pitching the final 3.0 innings allowing just one hit.
