Scarlet Knights Take Down Gophers 79-61 at Williams Arena

MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota Women's Basketball team (12-15, 5-10 B1G) fell to Rutgers (9-17, 2-12 B1G) on Thursday night at Williams Arena. The loss ended Minnesota's three-game home win streak with Deja Winters (18) and Sara Scalia (17) leading the way offensively.Â
In the loss the Gophers once again hit their average for threes made per game, hitting 8-of-20 from beyond the arc. Deja Winters, Gadiva Hubbard, and Sara Scalia combined for Minnesota's eight three-pointers. Minnesota turned the ball over a season-low 10 times with and made at least 20 free throws for the third time this season and second game in a row.Â
In the first quarter, Minnesota guards Sara Scalia and Deja Winters each had things going from three point land, going a combined 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. The Gophers led Rutgers 15-13 after 10 minutes at the Barn, with Deja Winters back-to-back threes putting the team up late in the frame.Â
Rutgers' conference-leading defense showed up in the second quarter, holding the Gopher offense to 7 points on 2-of-14 shooting. Rutgers closed the half on a 14 point run, and led the Maroon and Gold 33-22 at the midway point.Â
The teams traded buckets for much of the third, with the Gophers coming as close as nine during the quarter. Minnesota saw contributions from five different scorers in the third, but continued to trail after 30 minutes of play and eventually fell to Rutgers for the first time at home by a score of 79-61.Â
Minnesota heads out for its second to last road game of the regular season on Feb. 20, when the team travels to Lincoln, Neb., to take on the Cornhuskers for the second time this season. The game, which is scheduled for a 2 p.m. tip, can be seen on B1G+ and can be heard on KFAN+.Â
