‘U’ Skates to 7-1 Victory over St. Thomas

The Gophers cruised past the Tommies in the series-opener thanks to four-point efforts from seniors Abigail Boreen and Taylor Heise.
MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. -- The No. 1 Golden Gopher women's hockey team earned its sixth consecutive victory and third straight over the Tommies with a 7-1 win on Thursday night at St. Thomas Ice Arena. Minnesota has now outscored the WCHA-newcomers 23-3 in the three meetings between the two programs.
Minnesota (25-7-1) came out flying to start the contest, netting three goals in the first 12 minutes to create immediate breathing room. Senior forward Catie Skaja opened the scoring for the second straight game to push her goal total to a career-high 15 on the year. Forward Amy Potomak and defender Madeline Wethington added goals in the opening period. The Gophers' top forward line dominated in the middle frame, scoring three goals to carry a 6-1 lead into the final period of regulation. Abigail Boreen notched her 21st goal of the season, while Taylor Heise scored two quick goals to reach 25 on the year. St. Thomas (5-24-1) broke the shutout with a goal by Maddy Clough in the second. Senior defender Crystalyn Hengler added her fourth goal of the season late in the third period.
Freshman Skylar Vetter started in goal for Minnesota, stopping 11 shots to earn her sixth win of the season. St. Thomas' Dobchuk stopped 39 shots before being replaced by senior Eryn Cooley, who made 13 saves in relief.

"A great start to our weekend and a really solid overall effort," said head coach Brad Frost. "Congratulations to Taylor Heise on her 150th career point. Our top line had some great production once again. Overall, it was a really good team win. We played well defensively and so did Skylar [Vetter] in net. With an assist in the first period, Taylor Heise reached 150 career points. Heise finished with at least four points for the fifth time this season and notched her 19th multi-point game of the season. Minnesota's top line combined for 11 points and four goals in the win.
