Gophers Plate 10 in Run-Rule Victory Friday

TEMPE, Ariz. - Minnesota's offense would not be stopped Friday in a 10-1 run-rule rout of UTEP from Farrington Stadium in the Littlewood Classic at Arizona State.
The Gophers (4-4) scored three times in the bottom of the first and powered by home runs from Natalie DenHartog and Chloe Evans, added five more in the second jumping all over the Miners. Evans tallied four RBI, while DenHartog had three RBI and three runs scored. Ellee Jensen and Makenna Dowell each scored twice as the offense posted a season-best 10 runs in just four innings on the field.
Emily Leavitt pitched out of a jam in the first after walking the first two UTEP batters she faced by striking out two of the next three to escape the inning unscathed. The Gophers immediately used that momentum on the offensive end aided by an error, two walks and two hit-by-pitch, including a bases loaded HBP by Sara Kinch. Evans made it a 3-0 advantage lacing a two-run double to the wall in right.
The Miners got one run back during the second on a two-out single before DenHartog fired a dart to home plate catching a runner trying to score. Minnesota wasted no time answering back as Kayla Chavez drew a four-pitch walk and Jensen dropped down a bunt single. With one out, DenHartog waited on a changeup and sent a three-run home run that nearly cleared the palm trees surrounding Farrington Stadium for a 6-1 lead.
The offense didn't stop there as Kinch pulled a two-out single and the Evans show continued as she hammered a two-run shot to right center pushing the margin to 8-1. She matched her career high with four RBI in just two at bats Friday. Minnesota stretched the lead on a Miners error in the fourth and Emily Hansen's sacrifice fly plated the 10th run of the night.
Ansleigh Hollifield made her pitching debut for the Gophers in the fifth and tossed the final scoreless inning sealing the 10-1 run-rule victory. Leavitt picked up the win allowing one run on four hits.
