7-5 Wins over Illinois State and No. 21 Arizona State

Photo Gallery
TEMPE, Ariz. - Saturday belonged to Minnesota softball as it picked up a come-from-behind, 7-5 win over Illinois State and capped the night in dramatic fashion holding off No. 21 Arizona State, 7-5, at the Littlewood Classic from Farrington Stadium.

Game One
It was a late rally that opened the day for Minnesota as it erased a three-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings before Chloe Evans walked it off hitting a two-run home run in the eighth against Illinois State. Makenna Dowell delivered the clutch two-run double tying the game, 5-5, as the Gophers were down to their final strike.

The Redbirds took advantage of a lead-off walk in the first and struck for a pair of runs on three hits until Kayla Chavez caught a pop up and doubled off the runner at second ending a bases-loaded threat.

Autumn Pease took over in the circle during the second and escaped a jam for Minnesota keeping ISU off the board after two reached scoring position. The Gophers finally broke through in the third when Natalie DenHartog teed off on a two-out solo home run closing the gap to 2-1. Pease made quick work of the Redbirds in the fourth striking out the side behind a lethal changeup as she retired the first nine batters she faced.

Minnesota used another long ball to pull even in the fifth as Megan Dray battled in a nine-pitch at bat before sending one high over the right-center fence. ISU broke the game open, 5-2, during the seventh, but Dray responded for Minnesota lining her second solo home run cutting the margin to two. Sydney Strelow followed by hitting a triple to the wall and the Gophers got the potential tying run to first as DenHartog earned a two-out walk. Facing a 1-2 count, Dowell kept the game alive as she plated a pair on a double forcing extra innings.

The defense shined in the eighth facing international tiebreak rules as Chavez fielded a grounder and fired home to catch a runner. Pease fanned the next batter ending the Redbirds chance leading to Minnesota's heroics. On the second pitch she saw, Evans blasted the game winner for the Gophers.

Pease picked up the win allowing three runs in 6.2 innings and struck out nine. Offensively, six of the team's eight hits went for extra bases, including four home runs.

Game Two
The Gophers were not going to be shutout by the nationally-ranked Sun Devils again taking an early 1-0 lead as Espalin drew a one-out walk. Consecutive singles by DenHartog and Dowell loaded the bases and Evans laced a RBI single to right giving Minnesota the advantage. The margin stretched to 2-0 beginning the second as Strelow crushed a solo home run over the scoreboard in left center.

ASU answered back on a solo blast of its own starting the bottom half of the second and took advantage of an errant throw on a sacrifice bunt attempt. The Sun Devils tacked on three unearned runs pushing to a 4-2 lead. DenHartog opened the third on a walk and eventually came around the bases thanks to a RBI single from Sara Kinch closing the deficit to one.

Minnesota's defense made its presence known again in the third as Evans tracked down a fly ball and fired to first doubling off the ASU runner. The Gophers offense then had a chance to get back into the game and did exactly that as three-straight singles got the frame going. Dowell pushed a two-run single to center for a 5-4 edge and Evans followed on the next pitch hitting a RBI single for a two-run lead.

A DenHartog running catch in the gap ended the Sun Devils side of the fourth as Pease worked a quick 1-2-3 inning. The highlight reel defense continued for DenHartog during the next frame as she pulled back the potential go-ahead home run at the wall leaving two ASU runners on base. The Sun Devils were able to get a run back on a pinch-hit home run starting the sixth before the defense held on stranding two more base runners.

Dray added an insurance run in the seventh hitting an opposite field home run, her third of the day, giving Minnesota a two-run cushion, 7-5. After Pease struck out back-to-back batters looking, the Sun Devils brought the winning run to the plate as two-straight were hit-by-pitch, but the Gophers would not be denied forcing a fly out to end the game.

Four of the bottom six batters in the Minnesota lineup tallied multi-hit efforts on the way to a season-best 12 hits as a team. Pease threw a career-high 153 pitches in the complete-game victory allowing two earned runs and struck out eight.
