Ten Gophers Honored as WCHA Scholar-Athletes

Minnesota's ten recipients are among 83 student-athletes recognized by the conference.
MINNEAPOLIS -- Ten Golden Gopher women's hockey players are among the 83 student-athletes honored as 2021-22 WCHA Scholar-Athlete award recipients, the conference announced Tuesday.
Emily Brown was named a WCHA Scholar-Athlete for the fourth time while Gracie Ostertag earned her third award this season. Olivia King, Emily Oden, Catie Skaja, and Madeline Wethington each became two-time winners, while Lauren Bench, Josey Dunne, Maggie Nicholson, and Audrey Wethington earned their first scholar-athlete honors.
"I want to congratulate our 2021-22 WCHA Scholar-Athletes on behalf of the Faculty Athletics Representatives," WCHA FAR Chair and University of Minnesota Professor Frances Homans said. "Our players are an embodiment of what it means to be a student-athlete and continue to showcase their dedication as both students and competitors year-after-year."
"The WCHA strives to develop leaders academically and our student-athletes continue to raise the bar in the classroom," WCHA Commissioner Jennifer Flowers said. "We are proud to see so many of our young women gaining recognition for their academic excellence."
The WCHA Scholar-Athlete Award was developed through member institutional Faculty Athletics Representatives and approved by the WCHA membership for the 2005-06 season. To earn recognition as a WCHA Scholar-Athlete, league-member student-athletes must have completed at least one year of residency at their present institution prior to the current academic year and must also have a grade point average of at least a 3.50 on a 4.0 scale for the previous two semesters or three quarters. Student-athletes may also qualify if their overall GPA is at least 3.50 for all terms at their present institution.
Over the 16 years of the award, there have now been more than 1,300 WCHA Scholar-Athlete honorees representing every WCHA member institution. 47 of this season's 83 recipients are repeat honorees, with seven of those earning recognition for the fourth time.
