Gophers Face Hawkeyes on Friday Night

The No. 8 University of Minnesota gymnastics team is back at Maturi Pavilion this week as it hosts border rival and No. 13 Iowa at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 25. The match will be broadcast live on BTN.
Last Time Out
Minnesota most recently competed at the Big Five Meet at the Huntington Center in Toledo, Ohio. Lexy Ramler won the all-around (39.575) and tied for first on the beam (9.950), while Mya Hooten claimed the top spot on the floor (9.975).
As a team, the Gophers scored 196.500 to finish third. Minnesota competed against Michigan State, Rutgers, Penn State and Nebraska on Saturday night and finished behind Michigan State and Nebraska.
Minnesota's best event was the floor where it finished with a 49.550, which tied for the fifth best score in school history. The 49.550 also tied for Minnesota's top floor score ever away from home. The Gophers also tallied a 49.550 at Ohio State in 2018 and at Arizona State in 2004. On Saturday, the Gophers had three of the top four finishers in Hooten (first, 9.975), Ona Loper (tied for second, 9.925) and Halle Remlinger (tied for second, 9.925).
The Gophers scored a 49.150 on both the vault and bars and scored a 48.650 on beam, which was its final event of the competition.
Last Time Against Iowa
This will be the second time that Minnesota will face Iowa at Maturi Pavilion this season. The Gophers welcomed the Hawkeyes to the Twin Cities for a tri-meet earlier this year with UCLA on Jan. 17. Minnesota won that meet with a 196.900 in front of a 3,887 fans, which set a regular season meet record. Iowa was second with a 195.950.
Ramler won the all-around title at the mid-January meet with a score of 39.700. Her top tallies of the night came on bars and beam, where she recorded a 9.950 on each apparatus. Ona Loper finished second in the all-around competition with a 39.525 and her best result was on vault where she scored 9.950.
Gophers In the Rankings
Minnesota comes in at No. 8 overall in the national rankings. The Gophers are ranked second in the nation on floor, seventh on vault, ninth on bars and 25th on beam.
Ramler is ranked the No. 1 ranked gymnast in the all-around and is also ranked No. 4 on both bars and beam, No. 23 on vault and No. 31 on floor. Loper is ranked No. 6 in the nation in the all-around, highlighted by a No. 13 ranked on the floor. Minnesota's only other gymnast who is ranked in the top 20 is Halle Remlinger, who is ranked No. 19 on the floor. Mya Hooten, who is one of the most dynamic gymnasts on the floor and already has a perfect 10 this year on the apparatus, was previously ranked No. 5 in the nation. However, she fell out of the rankings as she has not competed the minimum amount of times on the floor to be ranked by NQS.
B1G Weekly Honors
Most recently, senior Lexy Ramler was named Big Ten Gymnast of the Week after her performance at the Big Five Meet at Elevate Toledo last Saturday. This is the 20th time that Ramler has earned the award in her career, extending her own conference record in that category.
Ramler, who is from St. Michael, Minn., placed first in the all-around with a score of 39.575, which was the highest score on Saturday and would have been the top score in the Friday portion of the competition as well.
Ramler, who is ranked No. 1 in the nation in all-around, scored a 9.950 on beam (tied for first), 9.875 on vault (tied for second), 9.875 on bars (tied for second) and 9.875 on floor (tied for tenth) at the Big Five Meet to finish in the top two in three events and in the top 10 in all four rotations. She also successfully defended her all-around title at the Big Five Meet, as she won last year with a program-record score of 39.850.
This is the second straight week that a Gopher has claimed this honor, as Ona Loper was named Big Ten Gymnast of the Week last week. This is also the second time this year that Ramler has been recognized.

Scouting Iowa
Iowa started the season with wins against Eastern Michigan and Texas Woman's University before finishing second at the tri-meet with Minnesota and UCLA. The Hawkeyes then posted Big Ten dual wins against Michigan State, Nebraska and Penn State before placing first in a quad meet against Rutgers, Kent State and Ursinus. Iowa competed on Friday at last week's Big Five Meet at Elevate Toledo and finished fourth out of five teams. The Hawkeyes finished with a 196.225 to finish fourth in the five team event.
Iowa has earned two Big Ten weekly honors this season. Junior JerQuavia Henderson was the Specialist of the Week on Jan. 10 and Marissa Rojas garnered Freshman of the Week honors on Jan. 25.
The Hawkeyes were selected to finish third – behind Michigan and Minnesota – in the Big Ten Preseason Poll in a vote of the league's 10 head coaches. Henderson and sophomore Adeline Kenlin were tabbed as Big Ten Gymnasts to Watch.
Iowa returned 15 letter winners in 2022, including three All-Americans and four All-Big Ten selections.
