MINNEAPOLIS -- Alonzo Verge Jr. led all players with 22 points, and Nebraska (7-17, 1-12 Big Ten) snapped a 14-game Big Ten losing streak as they topped the Gophers 78-65 at Pinnacle Bank Arena Wednesday night.
The Gophers (11-11, 2-11 Big Ten) were led by Jamison Battle in scoring and on the boards, as the sophomore clinched his third double-double of the season with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Battle struggled early, being held scoreless in the first 20 minutes, but the sophomore found his rhythm quickly in the second half, opening with three straight three-pointers and hitting 7-9 from the field out of the break. Payton Willis added 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists, while Sean Sutherlin tallied 11 points.
Nebraska took the first basket of the night and maintained their lead throughout the contest, never falling behind Minnesota. The Gophers managed a 7-0 run early in the second half to close the gap to seven at 31-38, but Nebraska closed the door with a 12-0 run of their own shortly after to up their lead to 20, never allowing Minnesota within 10 points over the remainder of the contest.
