MINNEAPOLIS -- Two Golden Gophers are among the WCHA's individual postseason award recipients. Senior Taylor Heise has been named the WCHA Offensive Player of the Year while freshman Peyton Hemp has been selected as WCHA Rookie of the Year.
Heise adds another accolade to her dominant 2021-22 campaign by becoming the first Gopher to win WCHA Offensive Player of the Year, which was introduced in 2017-18. The Lake City, Minn., native became the first Minnesota WCHA scoring champion since Nicole Schammel in 2018-19 by tallying 46 points (18g-28a) in 28 conference games. The senior forward stepped up her game in a big way, posting career-highs in points (64), goals (28), plus/minus rating (+42), shots (213), short-handed goals (5), and game-winning goals (6). Heise's scoring also tops the national leaders in points, goals, and short-handed goals. Minnesota's top-line center has surpassed the 100 and 150-career point and 50 career-goal milestones on her way to having the best offensive season by a Gopher since Dani Cameranesi (32g-34a) in 2015-16. Heise was named to the All-WCHA First Team last week and her three WCHA Forward of the Month honors (Nov., Jan., Feb.) are most by any Gopher since the award's introduction in 2016-17.Â
Hemp is the 10th Gopher to earn WCHA Rookie of the Year honors, joining joining Madeline Wethington (2020), Sarah Potomak (2016), Dani Cameranesi (2014), Hannah Brand (2013), Amanda Kessel (2011), Monique Lamoureux (2009), Gigi Marvin (2006), Bobbi Ross (2005), and Natalie Darwitz (2003). The forward from Andover, Minn., led all WCHA freshmen in points (26), goals (10), and trailed only fellow-Gopher Emily Zumwinkle in plus/minus rating (+17) in 26 conference games. Hemp was one of three Maroon and Gold representatives on the WCHA All-Rookie Team and became the first Minnesota rookie to win three WCHA Rookie of the Month awards (Oct., Nov., Feb.). Hemp, who was named WCHA Preseason Rookie of the Year, was a mainstay on the 'U's second forward line and showed disciplined play by a newcomer, taking only two penalties all season. The right-hander's 0.94 points-per-game (32 points in 34 games) is the most by a Minnesota rookie since Grace Zumwinkle's 1.00 PPG in 2017-18 (38 points in 38 games).
