Augusta, Georgia – After a one-hour rain delay, the University of Minnesota women's golf team played 18 holes on Saturday. The team was scheduled to play 36 holes, but the second round was canceled due to high winds.
Juniors Emma Carpenter and Grace Curran led the Gophers through the first round with scores of five-over par (77) and seven-over par (79), respectively.
Minnesota scored 322 (+34) in round one, and will look to make up ground in day two. They trail the leading South Carolina by 21 strokes.
Quotable
"The conditions were clearly the tale of the day, but we try to instill in our athletes that the conditions are the same for every player on the course and not an excuse for poor execution." Head coach Rhyll Brinsmead said. "After the wind picked up well over 35mph they canceled our 2nd round. For the majority of the day we were hanging tough but really mentally slipped over our last 3-5 holes. We need to do a better job executing par 5 scoring and decision making. We have an opportunity to hit refresh and shoot a number tomorrow!"
"Emma had an overall solid day, and made some great pars & birdies to position herself in the top 20," Brinsmead said.
Notable
After birdies on holes six and seven, Carpenter's score of 77 put her in a tie for 20th place after the first round of play.
Curran had two birdies in the round, leading to a score of 79 through 18 holes placed.
Joanne Free birdied hole four, and the senior finished the first round at 10-over par (82).
After birdying holes eight and nine, junior Leah Herzog capped off round one with a score of 12-over par (84). Senior Geraldine Wong also finished with a score of 12-over par (84).
Up Next
After a shorter-than-expected first day, the Gophers will play the second and final round of the tournament on Sunday. All teams will resume play at 9 a.m. CT. Live scoring can be found at Golfstat.com.
