Gophers Fall to Bulldogs in NCAA Quarterfinals

3/12/2022 5:20:00 PM | Women's Hockey

Minnesota’s 25th season comes to a close.

MINNEAPOLIS – The Golden Gopher women's hockey team saw its season come to an end after a 2-1 defeat to Minnesota Duluth in the NCAA Quarterfinals.

Minnesota (29-9-1) failed to advance out of an NCAA Quarterfinal at Ridder Arena for the first time since 2008. The Gophers struck first midway through the first period when Abigail Boreen converted a power-play opportunity to continue her incredible postseason run. Minnesota Duluth (26-11-1) responded with a goal late in the second period from Mannon McMahon. With a tie game entering the third period, the stage was set for some heroics. It was the Bulldogs' Gabbie Hughes who provided the game-winning goal with 14:36 left in regulation for her fourth of the tournament. The Gophers peppered Soderberg down the stretch, but could not find the back of the net. The 'U' outshot the Bulldogs 38-27.

Lauren Bench stopped 25 shots in her final game as a Gopher. Minnesota Duluth's Soderberg recorded 37 saves in the win.

Quotable
"This one hurts," said head coach Brad Frost. "This isn't what anyone in our program envisioned. We were confident, not overconfident, coming in. We were hoping for a different result, but I'm proud of our group and how they battled to the end. Unfortunately, we weren't able to get one at the end to send it to overtime."

Notable
Fifth-year defender Olivia Knowles set the new program record with 168 career games-played. Fifth-year defender Emily Brown now holds sole possession of second place with 167 career games-played. Minnesota finished off its 25th season with a 29-9-1 record and a WCHA regular season championship.
