Forward Peyton Hemp, the WCHA Rookie of the Year, becomes the third winner in program history and first since 2016.
MINNEAPOLIS – Forward Peyton Hemp has been named Division I Rookie of the Year, as announced by the Hockey Commissioners Association on Wednesday. Hemp becomes the third Gopher to win the award and first since Sarah Potomak in 2016.
"We are very happy for Peyton to receive this honor," said head coach Brad Frost. "She was consistent from the time she stepped onto our campus and had an incredible year."
The Andover, Minn., native built an incredibly decorated resume during her first collegiate season. The 2021 Minnesota Ms. Hockey Award winner started off the year by scoring the team's first goal in the season-opener against Ohio State on Oct. 1 and later became Minnesota's 10th WCHA Rookie of the Year Her impressive year also includes three WCHA Rookie of the Month honors and a conference best in points (32) and goals (12) among freshmen.
Only taking two penalties, Hemp scored five game-winning goals and scored in every situation by adding both a power play and shorthanded goal on the year. The right-hander's 32 points were most by a Gopher rookie since Taylor Heise in 2018. Hemp ranked fifth on the team in points and goals, and ranked second in game-winning goals.
