MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota senior Sarah Bacon finished as the national runner-up in the 1-meter, highlighting the second day of action for the Golden Gophers at the 2022 NCAA Championships at the McAuley Aquatic Center in Atlanta, Ga.

Bacon, who was a three-time national champion in the event, finished second with a score of 356.60. She ended 9.15 points behind Miami's Mia Vallee, whose score of 365.75 broke the meet record of 363.20 set by Bacon in 2019.

A native of Indianapolis, Bacon was sixth through two rounds but slowly climbed her way back up. A score of 62.40 in the fourth round moved her into second place where she remained for the rest of the competition. In the fifth round, she posted a 66.30, her highest score of the finals and the fourth best of any dive.

In her career, Bacon won national titles on the 1-meter in 2018, 2019 and 2021, and was also the runner-up in 2017.

For her second-place finish, Bacon earned the first 17 points of the Championships for Minnesota. Through two days of competition, the Golden Gophers are in 23rd place.

Also in diving, senior Joy Zhu finished 19th in the prelims with a score of 285.40.

The night session ended with the 200 free relay, where the Gophers' squad of freshman Hannah Cornish, senior Olivia Bloomer and juniors Grace Bennin and Maggie Summit placed 21st. The team's time of 1:28.79 was the third fastest in the event this year for Minnesota.

Minnesota also had two swimmers compete in Thursday's prelims.

Sophomore Megan Van Berkom placed 32nd in the 200 IM with a time of 1:57.15, while Cornish finished tied for 39th in the 50 free as she posted her third fastest time of the season at 22.36.

Minnesota returns to the pool Friday for day three of the 2022 NCAA Championships. Prelims begin at 9 a.m. CT with Van Berkom competing in the 400 IM, Cornish taking part in the 200 free and junior Emma Lezer taking to the pool for the first time in the 100 breast.

Diving will take place on the three-meter as Bacon goes for her second straight title, while Zhu also competes. The finals start at 5 p.m. with the aforementioned events plus the 400 medley relay.
