Gophers WNIT Trip Ends in Second Round

MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota (15-18, 7-11 B1G) dropped its second round WNIT game 78-57 to South Dakota State University (25-9, 17-1 Summit) on Sunday afternoon. The Jackrabbits outscored the Gophers 45-27 in the second half to pull away from the Gophers. Deja Winters and Gadiva Hubbard both scored 11 for the Gophers in the loss.
The game opened up in the Gophers favor early on with Sara Scalia hitting a pair of first-quarter threes to push Minnesota's lead to 13-8. Kadi Sissoko got into foul trouble with a pair with 5:25 remaining in the first quarter with SDSU going on a 9-4 run after Sissoko was forced to sit and led 19-17 after the first.
In the second the Gophers took back the lead with a Hubbard triple from the wing that banked off the glass. Sissoko returned and was quickly hit with a third foul, but Minnesota's perimeter defense held strong throughout the first half, keeping SDSU in range. A 10-0 Jackrabbit run pushed their lead to five, but Minnesota closed the half by scoring six of the final 10 points with Winters hitting a big three and a subsequent block on the defensive end to end the half at 33-30.
The third quarter saw the Jackrabbits outscore the Gophers 26-10, holding the Gophers to 2-of-13 from the floor while shooting 10-of-18 on the other end. South Dakota State's lead grew to as large as 24 down the stretch with Haleigh Timmer scoring 20 of her game-high 22 points in the second half.
As a team Minnesota shot 20-of-59 from the floor and hit their season average eight threes. At the free throw line the Gophers hit 9-of-11 and turned the ball over just 12 times in the loss.
