MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota's Bar Soloveychik made history in his NCAA Championships debut Thursday at the McAuley Aquatic Center in Atlanta, Ga.

The freshman from Israel broke his own school record in the 500 free prelims, then went on to earn Honorable Mention All-American status in the evening session.

"We had a great first day; everyone moved up from their seeds," Minnesota head coach Kelly Kremer said. "We haven't scored in the 500 free for many years at this meet. It was fun to have a first-year guy in Bar do a great job today and get us on the board."

Soloveychik, who set the school record in the 500 free at the Big Ten Championships last month, entered the day as the No. 19 seed in the event. Swimming in the final heat of the prelims, he touched in 4:12.76, lowering his school mark by 1.09 seconds and earning himself a spot in the consolation finals.

Thursday evening, Soloveychik came in with a time of 4:13.51, good for the second fastest time in program history behind only his prelims performance. Finishing 13th, Soloveychik earned Honorable Mention All-America honors for his efforts and scored four points for the Gophers, putting them in 25th place.

He is the first Gopher to become an All-American in the event since Ray Betuzzi in 2008 and it was the best finish in the event since Justin Mortimer captured third in 2005.

Also in the 500 free Thursday, sophomore Chris Nagy lowered his personal record by over 1.5 seconds as he finished the prelims in 48th at 4:21.64

In diving, junior Jake Butler came in 19th in the 1-meter prelims with a score of 321.50.

Minnesota returns to the pool Friday for day three of the 2022 NCAA Championships. Prelims begin at 9 a.m. CT as senior Max McHugh begins his quest to repeat as champion in the 100 breast, while Soloveychik competes in the 200 free and Butler takes to the 3-meter at 11:30 a.m. Finals are set to start at 5 p.m.
