Gopher Signee Named Minnesota's Mr. Basketball

University of Minnesota men's basketball signee Braeden Carrington was named the state of Minnesota's Mr. Basketball, announced by the organization Tuesday. The honor is awarded to the top senior boys' basketball player. Carrington, who is the first commit under head coach Ben Johnson, will join the Golden Gopher program this summer.

Carrington capped off a remarkable 2021-22 senior season last weekend when he guided Park Center High School to a 4A state title. An all-tournament team selection, the Pirates won the state title over defending champions, Wayzata High School. This year, Carrington helped Park Center to a 31-1 record, a Northwest Suburban Conference championship and the school's first-ever state title in program history. Individually, Carrington averaged 17.8 points per game his senior season and was also named to Star Tribune's All-Metro Team. Carrington became the first Gopher commit since Amir Coffey to win the award.

Incoming signee Pharrel Payne was also a top 10 finalist for the award earlier this season as he completed his high school career at Park of Cottage Grove High School. The duo joins Joshua Ola-Joseph this summer. Ola-Joseph, hailing from Osseo, Minn., is currently playing with AZ Compass Prep School in Chandler, Ariz.
