3/7/2022 7:45:00 PM | Softball
NORMAN, Okla. - Minnesota softball was unable to contain the offense of the No. 1 team in the nation, Oklahoma, Monday from Marita Hynes Field falling 9-1 in front of a sold-out crowd of 1,531.
The defending national champion Sooners capitalized on back-to-back walks with one out in the bottom of the first. OU loaded the bases hitting a single and took a 1-0 lead on an infield single. The Gophers answered back in the second as Chloe Evans pulled a one-out single and moved to third on consecutive wild pitches. Minnesota used a two-out rally getting a walk to Sydney Strelow and a hit-by-pitch by Megan Dray loading the bases. Ellee Jensen and the Gophers pulled even, 1-1, as the senior sent a RBI single to the shortstop.
A lead-off walk in the bottom of the second came around to score on a triple as the Sooners regained the lead. The top team in the country added two more runs on a double stretching to a 4-1 advantage. Natalie DenHartog continued her strong effort at the plate during the road swing hitting a lead-off single to left before Makenna Dowell and Evans drew free passes loading the bases. The Gophers failed to convert on the one-out chance leaving the bases full for the second-straight inning.
Oklahoma tacked on three unearned runs in the third frame aided by three walks pushing in front, 7-1, and scored twice on a double in the fourth. The Gophers could not extend the game in the fifth going down in order suffering a 9-1 setback.
Minnesota had its share of opportunities to score on the Sooners, but left seven runners on base in the contest. The two teams combined for 13 free bases totaling 12 walks and one hit batter.
