STILLWATER, Okla. - The Gophers dropped a 7-6 ballgame in 10 innings at No. 10 Oklahoma State in a game continued from Sunday's weather delay before falling 7-0 in game two Wednesday night at Cowgirl Stadium in Stillwater, Okla.
Game One (Continued from Sunday)
In a game that spread 10 innings across four days due to weather delays, the Gophers held leads on four separate occasions, but could not hold off the Cowgirls in a 7-6 setback.
Three free passes in the top of the first loaded the bases for Minnesota and Lauren Espalin scored after a wild pitch taking a 1-0 lead without putting a ball in play. Before the bottom of the first could get going, lighting was detected in the area and a 54-minute weather delay put a halt to the action. OSU quickly evened the game as a lead-off single eventually scored on a squeeze bunt before Emily Leavitt and the defense stranded two runners in scoring position.
Both sides had chances to break the deadlock putting runners on base and three walks to OSU in the fourth loaded the bases. Leavitt got a swinging strikeout and a weak ground ball ending the chance and left three more on base.
The Gophers broke the tie in the top of the fifth as Espalin singled to open the frame and Natalie DenHartog followed by hitting a double. Makenna Dowell was hit by a pitch loading the bases without an out before the third weather delay. Only three pitches were thrown from that point with the final toss hitting Sara Kinch on the thigh to bring home the go-ahead run giving Minnesota a 2-1 advantage when play was halted for the day.
When play resumed Wednesday evening, the Gophers were unable to convert their opportunity and left the bases loaded as OSU struck out the side. The momentum immediately shifted as the Cowgirls drew a walk and launched a two-run home run to move in front, 3-2, in the bottom of the fifth. Minnesota would not go away during the seventh and used a two-base error on Dowell's one-out single to put a runner at third. Kinch dropped down a squeeze bunt allowing pinch runner Ellee Jensen to slide home safely and force extra innings.
It was DenHartog again coming through in the ninth with her third hit of the contest following Espalin's lead-off walk. The senior sent a two-run home run to the opposite field and helped Minnesota jump in front, 5-3. OSU answered with back-to-back doubles to get a run back and pulled even hitting a RBI single. Ali Lindner walked with one out in the 10th and the Gophers regained a one-run advantage as Sydney Strelow ripped a RBI single. The Cowgirls continued the back-and-forth affair and struck for a pair of two-out runs, including a bases-loaded walk that closed the game, 7-6.
Game Two
The offense failed to get going in the final game of the extended Oklahoma road trip suffering a 7-0 loss.
OSU jumped in front, 1-0, capitalizing on a lead-off walk that later scored on a RBI single before the Gophers turned an inning-ending double play in the first. Two walks and two singles allowed the Cowgirls to tack on three runs building a 4-0 edge through three frames.
Minnesota got its only base runner of the contest as Espalin drew a walk opening the fourth and she moved into scoring position on a groundout. The Gophers were unable to push her farther as the deficit remained four. Thanks to a one-out throw by DenHartog from center field to Kinch at the plate, Minnesota held off OSU in the fourth stranding three runners on base.
The Cowgirls added a solo home run in the fifth stretching the margin to 5-0 and tallied two more the next inning securing the 7-0 win.
