Minnesota Suffers Shutout Loss at Nebraska
4/16/2022 3:30:00 PM | Softball
LINCOLN, Neb. - Minnesota softball suffered an 11-0 loss at (RV) Nebraska Saturday afternoon from Bowlin Stadium.
Â
The Gophers had a lead-off single in each of the first three innings but went 0-for-8 with runners on base as the offense failed to score.
Â
Lauren Espalin singled to open the game and Natalie DenHartog drew a two-out walk as Minnesota put runners on early before the Huskers ended the frame on a swinging strikeout to keep the game scoreless. Autumn Pease needed just nine pitches to shut down Nebraska in the first and Sara Kinch opened the second ripping a single into center, but the home side turned an inning-ending double play, erasing the opportunity.
Â
Back-to-back singles from the Huskers started the bottom of the second and both scored on a RBI double jumping to a 2-0 advantage. With two Nebraska runners in scoring position, Kayla Chavez perfectly fielded a squeeze bunt and caught a runner at home as Minnesota was able to get out of the inning trailing by two. Chavez started the third beating out an infield single as the visitors looked to close the gap with the potential tying run at the plate.
Â
The game turned in the bottom of the third as the Huskers capitalized on a Gophers error scoring six times, five of which were unearned, pushing their margin to 8-0. It was a pair of two-run homers that did the bulk of the damage. Nebraska used four hits and a walk in the fourth stretching the lead to double-digits and closed out the run-rule victory, 11-0, in five frames.
