PITTSBURGH, Pa. – After 18 holes of play, the Maroon and Gold sit in a tie for 10th at the Big Ten Championship in Pittsburgh, Pa. The University of Minnesota women's golf team finished round one with a score of 299 (+15) which puts them in a tie with rival Wisconsin.
After the shotgun start was delayed one hour, junior Emma Carpenter and senior Geraldine Wong finished the round atop the Gophers' leaderboard, with both finishing the round with a score of 74. As a team, the Gophers trail leading Michigan State by 17 strokes heading into day two.
Quotable
"There is always a great amount of anticipation and excitement as we head to our conference championship," head coach Rhyll Brinsmead said. "We had some nerves today but settled in nicely to our round. I know we've got the ability and talent to shoot some low numbers at Fox Chapel and I'm excited for the next two days. We've now got a better feel for the greens so I expect some lower numbers tomorrow."
Notable
After first playing the back nine, Wong birdied twice with zero bogeys on the final nine holes of the day. That push in the second half of the day bumped her up into a tie for 33rd place. Also finishing at three-over par (74) was Carpenter, who got off to a good start by birdying two of the first three holes on the day.
Just one stroke behind was freshman Alexis McMurray, who is competing in her second tournament this spring. She finished the first round at four-over par (75), including two birdies on the back nine, to place her in a 40th.
Closely following was senior Joanne Free, who's in a tie for 46th after birdying holes 8, 10 and 13. She finished the round with a score of five-over par (76).
Once again following by just one stroke was junior Grace Curran, who ended with a score of six-over par (77) after 18 holes. Her first round score puts her in a tie for 54th.
Junior Leah Herzog rounded out the Minnesota lineup with a score of nine-over par (80), placing her in a tie for 75th.
