Sell-Out Crowd Sees Gophers Fall to Terps

MINNEAPOLIS - In front of a sellout crowd of 1,050 at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium, the Golden Gophers softball team suffered a 6-1 loss to Maryland Saturday afternoon. It was a monumental day at the stadium as Minnesota retired the jersey of former All-American Gretchen Larson during a pre-game ceremony.
The Gophers were able to get just three hits in the contest to go with two walks and a hit batter.
The first six Maryland batters reached safely in the top of the third leading to a four-run frame as the visitors broke the deadlock before Minnesota could turn a brilliant, inning-ending double play started by Kayla Chavez.
The Gophers scratched a run across in the fourth as Sara Kinch laced a single into center and moved to second on a Terps error. Pinch runner MacKenzie Denson sprinted to third via a wild pitch and crossed home plate as Makenna Dowell lifted a sacrifice fly to left field closing the gap to 4-1.
A two-run top of the fifth pushed the Maryland lead to five as it had a pair of early singles that advanced on stolen bases and scored from a two-run single back up the middle. Minnesota was unable to rally late as the Terps retired 12 straight to finish off the game, 6-1.
