Gophers Looking to Ride Late Round Momentum into Round Two

FRENCH LICK, IN -- After one round of play at the Big Ten Men's Golf Championship, the University of Minnesota sits in 11th place after shooting a combined score of 298(+10). With two rounds left on the Pete Dye Course, the Gophers will be looking to climb a tightly packed midfield.
The Maroon and Gold began the day on the back-nine, paired with Michigan and Maryland as the last group to tee off. Sophomore Ben Warian was the last Gopher to start his round, but he led Minnesota through one round, shooting a 72 (E). Warian had a flawless first nine holes, with eight pars and one birdie, and finished the round in similar fashion with two pars and two birdies in his last four holes.
Following closely behind Warian was freshman Bennett Swavely, who shot a 74(+2) on his first go around on the Pete Dye Course. Swavely cashed in the most pars of any Gopher with 13 on the round. Senior Lincoln Johnson and junior Antoine Sale each had a 76(+4) in their first rounds.
Rounding out the Gophers first round was freshman Eduardo Galdos, who scored a 78(+6) in his first look at Big Ten tournament play. Galdos had three birdies on the day and will be looking to bounce back in round two.

"Guys battled hard all day and really found a bit of momentum to finish off our round," said head coach Justin Smith. "We need to keep that momentum to start the round tomorrow and make a move up the leaderboard. I always love watching these guys compete as they are always grinding till the end. We are excited to be better tomorrow.

Minnesota will be back on the hole-10 tee box tomorrow at 8:40 a.m. (CT) for round two of the Big Ten Men's Golf Championship, paired with Ohio State and Rutgers.
