Gophers’ Big Ten Run Ends Against Buckeyes

Minnesota falls to top seeded Ohio State, 0-4
On Friday, the University of Minnesota women's tennis team took the court for the second time in as many days. In the second round of the Big Ten Tournament, the Golden Gophers advanced with three straight singles wins to close out the comeback victory over the Nittany Lions. This afternoon, they matched up with the top seeded Buckeyes, who are yet to lose in Big Ten play. Ohio State continued their streak, as they defeated Minnesota, 0-4.
With Friday's defeat, Minnesota concluded the Big Ten Tournament going 1-1, coming to a season record of 18-10. The No. 10 Buckeyes will advance to the semifinals, playing either Illinois or Wisconsin tomorrow.
For just the eighth time this season, Minnesota's opponent scored the opening point of the match through doubles. Ohio State jumped out to the early lead with wins at No. 1 and No. 2.
At doubles No. 1, the Ohio State pairing of Allen and Boulais opened the advantage for the top-seeded Buckeyes. With each of the No. 2 and No. 3 matches knotted at 4 games apiece, Marzal and Cantos led Ohio State to the early lead. The No. 3 match featuring Lucy Lu and Maria Rizzolo went unfinished.
Ohio State posted singles victories at No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6.
The Buckeyes carried their momentum from doubles, as they won at each of the singles positions. The Golden Gophers were unable to secure a point against a singles lineup that featured three ranked players.
The No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3 matches went unfinished on account of previous results.
Minnesota wraps up the Big Ten Tournament and regular season having won 18 matches, their most since 2003. The Gophers will await the NCAA tournament selection on Monday for potential further play.
