EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Golden Gophers softball team dropped a 2-0 ballgame against No. 8 seed Wisconsin Wednesday in the first round of the Big Ten Conference Tournament at Secchia Stadium.
Â
Minnesota (26-24-1 overall), the No. 9 seed, could not get its offense kick started generating only four base runners with three singles and a walk.
Â
Autumn Pease got the first Badgers batter out with a swinging strikeout before the next two reached on bloop singles in the bottom of the first. A third-consecutive single plated the first run of the game until Sara Kinch fired to Makenna Dowell at third catching a runner trying to steal, helping end the inning with the Gophers trailing 1-0.
Â
Megan Dray gave Minnesota its first hit of the contest with a one-out single in the second as the senior was the only base runner to reach in the opening three innings for the Maroon & Gold. Ellee Jensen drew a walk to begin the fourth and moved to third on consecutive outs, but the Gophers could not find the swing they needed to even the score.
Â
Pease retired 10 of the next 11 Badgers she faced after the RBI single giving the offense a chance to come through before she exited the game throwing four innings allowing four hits with two strikeouts. Kinch delivered a two-out single for Minnesota in the fifth only to see the No. 8 seed maintain the shutout. The Badgers extended their advantage in the bottom half of the frame getting a lead-off single that later scored on a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 edge.
Â
Natalie DenHartog used her speed for an infield single with two outs in the sixth and scampered into scoring position via a wild pitch. The Gophers left her on base as they continued to miss on the opportunities to rally and suffered the loss, 2-0.
