Tiarre Sales Shares Importance of AAPI Month
5/16/2022 10:12:00 AM | Gymnastics
Gopher Gymnastics returning senior Tiarre Sales recently sat down with Gopher Athletics to discuss what Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month means to her:
My mom is Japanese and my Dad is Filipino. Both of my parents were born and raised in Hawaii as where I was born on the mainland. I would say that my parents have brought together bits and pieces of Hawaiian, Japanese, and Filipino culture into my upbringing. With the Hawaiian culture being very respectful and family-like, I was raised to call all my elders aunty and uncle regardless of relationship, which is normal in Hawaii. However, growing up in the mainland this was very strange because everyone here calls their elders by their given names. Little mannerisms like this have played a part in my life while growing up and these little things actually make a big impact in your life without realizing it because those around you think it unnecessary or strange.
Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month gives us and everyone else a chance to learn. As I have multiple cultures that I am a part of I feel like I don't know that much and want to learn more. Having this month allows me to gain more knowledge with all the social media posts with others explaining and displaying their cultures.
Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month is important because it gives the AAPI community representation that it has been lacking. It means a lot to have a whole month dedicated to your heritage to honor all the people that came before us to make our cultures what they are now. This month is important to educate others and bring awareness to the AAPI community. May gives all Asian American and Pacific Islanders the opportunity to be seen and heard to break the stereotypes and inaccurate information people know. This month is important to me because I have reached a point in my life where I am proud of my heritage and no longer embarrassed and can share this experience with a much bigger community.
Golden Gopher student-athletes, coaches, staff, and administration can celebrate Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month by learning more about all the diverse cultures and keeping an open mind. Learning about our history and giving the AAPI community the same recognition given to other minorities. Celebrating Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage month could be as fun as trying new foods, listening to different musics, and watching movies! Not everything has to be about history, experiencing culture is a fun and interactive way to celebrate!!
