The Wildcats scored eight runs in the top of the fourth
MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Golden Gophers fell 11-9 in game two to the Northwestern Wildcats on Friday night at Siebert Field.
The Wildcats (23-27, 9-14 Big Ten) scored eight of their 11 runs in the top of the fourth to break the game open. The Gophers (16-35, 6-17 Big Ten) would cut the once 10-1 lead to 11-9 with a grand slam in the bottom of the ninth inning but couldn't close the gap any further.
Wildcats' starter Michael Farinelli (6-5) worked 8.2 innings, striking out five while allowing 12 hits and nine earned runs.
Minnesota was paced offensively by Jack Kelly (3-for-5, two home runs, six RBI) and Jake Perry (2-for-2). Kelly tallied his first career multi-homer game and set his career-high for RBI.
Northwestern started the scoring in the top of the first with a two-run home run by Anthony Calarco.
The Gophers bounced back with one in the bottom of the third when a Jack Kelly RBI double down the left field line plated Boston Merila from first.
NU responded in a major way, plating eight runs on five hits and six walks in the top of the fourth to go up 10-1. Massey (2-8) was chased from the game after 3.0 innings despite having six strikeouts. He was tagged with seven hits and seven earned runs on the night.
Minnesota would get three back in the fourth, starting with Ronald Sweeny's six home run of the year, a solo shot. The 'U' would load up the bases with no one out, scoring one run on a bases loaded walk by Bateman and another on a double play ball.
After NU added another to go up 11-4 in the fifth, Gophers senior Jack Kelly hit his seventh home run of the year, a solo shot, to center field in the bottom of the frame.
Neither team scored from the sixth through eighth innings. Gophers left-hander Noah DeLuga struck out a career-high four batters in 3.0 no-hit innings of work from the sixth through the eighth innings.
The 'U' loaded up the bases in the bottom of the ninth and Kelly blasted a 3-1 pitch over the left center field fence to cut NU's lead to 11-9. Riley Swenson grounded out to second to end the game.
