MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota track and field program got its second bid to the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Thursday in Fayetteville, Ark., with Tess Keyzers earning the spot in the women's hammer throw field at Hayward Field. The rest of the women's team earned five additional spots to Saturday's NCAA quarterfinal round.
Keyzers, who is now a two-time qualifier in the hammer throw, earned her spot out of the second of three flights. She posted a season-best mark of 64.92m (213-0) to finish as the top competitor after two flights. With 16 competitors in the final flight, Keyzers had to wait to find out her fate. Keyzers fell to 11th-place, and secured the spot in the event for the second-straight season.
Keyzers joins Kostas Zaltos in the hammer throw, making the Golden Gophers the only Big Ten team to qualify both a men's and women's student-athlete to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the event. The team is also just one of nine in the entire country to do so this season.
Minnesota's success continued later in the day, this time on the track. Akilah Lewis qualified for the NCAA quarterfinal round of the 100m with a 11.47. Lewis came in as the last qualifier (48th), and finished 14th in the first round to move on based on time. Her time goes down as the No. 4 100m time in program history.
A short time later the dynamic duo of Jayla Campbell and Janielle Josephs both advanced in the 400m, both earning time qualifying spots. Campbell finished 18th in a time of 53.20 while Josephs' time of 53.46 was good enough for 23rd. The top 12 will qualify for a spot in Eugene on Saturday night.
The Maroon and Gold got another NCAA quarterfinalist in Abigail Schaaffe in the 400m hurdles. The 2022 Big Ten champion in the event finished second in her heat to automatically advance to Saturday. Her 57.79 was good enough for a 11th-place finish in the first round.
Minnesota's final advancement came in the form of Amira Young in the 200m. The Chicago, Ill., native finished fourth in her heat in a time of 23.64 to advance in the event for the first time in her career at the NCAA West Preliminary round.
Minnesota had a number of other student-athletes compete on Thursday that were unable to advance in their events. Keyzers followed up her hammer throw performance with a 20th-place finish in the shot put while McKenzie Duwenhoegger finished 29th in her NCAA debut and Devia Brown finished 40th overall. Anastasia Korzenowski finished her season in the 800m with a time of 2:10.29. Last, but not least, was Megan Hasz in the 10000m, wrapping up her legendary career with a 15th-place finish in the event in a time of 34:12.78.
The women will resume action on Saturday while the men complete their NCAA regional action on Friday. Minnesota begins action on Friday as early as 1 p.m. in the men's discus event. Track events begin at 5 p.m. and can be streamed on SEC Network+, which can be found on the ESPN app or on ESPN.com.
