Two Records Broken on Final Day of NCAA West Regionals

MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota track and field program saw two school records go down on Saturday at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds in Fayetteville, Ark. In total six more bids to the NCAA Outdoor Championships were secured, including the school-record breaking 4x400m relay team to cap off the competition.

The mile relay consisting of Jayla Campbell, Janielle Josephs, Val Larson and Abigail Schaaffe dropped an impressive time of 3:31.37 to earn an automatic qualifying bid to Hayward Field. The quartet now owns both the indoor and outdoor school records and will enter the NCAA Outdoor Championships with the 13th-fastest seed time in the country.

Minnesota's second school record came from Akilah Lewis, who dropped a 11.20 in the 100m quarterfinal. Lewis came into the NCAA regional as the No. 48 ranked sprinter in the event and ranked 139th in the nation this season and by the end of the week finished as the 16th-fastest sprinter in the West region and the top sprinter in Minnesota history.

Just minutes earlier Lewis, along with Odell Frye, Lauren Hansen and Amira Young, secured a spot in Eugene, Ore., with a season-best 4x100m relay time of 44.37. The time was good enough for an 11th-place finish, and makes the team the first 4x100m relay team to make the national meet since 2012.

While the Gophers got the job done on the track, Minnesota's field events came up big to start the day. First it was true freshman Nyalaam Jok who secured a spot at the national meet in the high jump. The Annandale, Minn., native leaped to a 1.81m (5-11 1/4) finish with just one miss to earn the spot. Jok, who was the Big Ten outdoor runner up this season, holds Minnesota's school record at 1.86m (6-1 1/4).

Just moments later Shelby Frank stamped her ticket to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the discus, the second time she has done so in her young career. Frank's third toss of 56.68m (185-11) was good enough for a sixth-place finish.

Just a few weeks after winning another Big Ten title, Abigail Schaaffe came out with arguably a more impressive performance on Saturday in the 400m hurdles. Schaaffe posted a personal best time of 56.84 in the event to finish fourth overall and second in her heat. Schaaffe's time will enter the NCAA Outdoor Championships with a top-10 time in the event.

Capping off the Maroon and Gold's national championship qualifiers is Bethany Hasz in the 5000m. One of the most successful Gophers in history, Hasz extended her career one more race with a fifth-place finish in her heat to automatically qualify. The trip to the national meet is Hasz's seventh overall (including cross country) and is the third time she'll run the 5000m at the outdoor championships.

Others that ended their outdoor season on Saturday included the dynamic duo of Campbell and Josephs in the 400m. Campbell finished her season with a 16th-place finish while Josephs finished 19th overall in the NCAA quarterfinals. Tiera Robinson-Jones finished her season 36th in the women's triple jump while Amira Young finished 19th overall in the women's 200m in a season-best time of 23.38.
