Nine Gophers Earn All-America Honors on Day 2 of NCAAs

6/9/2022 11:08:00 PM | Women's Track & Field

MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota women's track program earned nine All-America honors on Thursday in Eugene, Ore., at Hayward Field. Two relays along with two individuals earned the Honorable Mention All-America distinction for the Maroon and Gold.

The highlight of the day came from the Gophers 4x100m relay team with the team setting a new school record that had stood since 2018. The team of Odell Frye, Akilah Lewis, Lauren Hansen and Amira Young posted a time of 44.08 to break the 2018 record. The time was good enough for 17th overall, just one spot away from Second Team All-America honors. For Frye, she earns the All-America distinction in her first season with the program while Hansen and Lewis also earned the distinction for the first time in their careers.

Running in a pair of events on Thursday was Abigail Schaaffe with the sophomore making her individual debut in the women's 400m hurdles. The Jamaican finished 19th overall to earn her All-America honor with a time of 58.77. Schaaffe also anchored the women's 4x400m relay team that consisted of Jayla Campbell, Janielle Josephs and Val Larson. The team finished 21st overall, capping the career of Larson as a four-time All-American. The group ends their time together with both the indoor and outdoor school records in the 4x400m relay and as multiple time Big Ten champions.

In the field Tess Keyzers started off the day with a All-American performance in the women's hammer throw. She tossed a mark of 63.70m (209-0) to finish 21st overall and earn her fourth All-American honor of her career. Her hammer throw disctinction is the second time she's finished 21st in the hammer throw in her career.
