Abigail Boreen, Taylor Heise, Gracie Ostertag, and Grace Zumwinkle will all wear the 'C' for the 26th season of Gopher women's hockey.

MINNEAPOLIS – Fifth-year skaters Abigail Boreen, Taylor Heise, Gracie Ostertag, and Grace Zumwinkle have been selected as captains of the Gopher women's hockey team for the 2022-23 season, head coach Brad Frost announced. All four captains will wear the 'C' for the first time since the 2010-11 season.

"We are very happy to announce that Grace, Taylor, Gracie and Abigail will be our captains for the 2022–23 season," said head coach Brad Frost. "They are all exceptional hockey players, but more importantly, they are great people and leaders. They all bring unique personalities, styles, perspectives and experiences that will benefit our team this coming year."

Zumwinkle returns to the Gophers as a captain for the second time after representing the Red, White and Blue in the 2022 Winter Olympics. As a captain during the 2020-21 season, Zumwinkle tallied 24 points and 17 goals in 20 games on her way to finishing as a top-three finalist for the Patty Kazmaier Award.

Heise will wear the 'C' for the first time after serving as an assistant captain for the 2021-22 season. The Lake City, Minn. native will look to build on a historically good season that saw her become Minnesota's third-ever Patty Kazmaier Award winner while leading the nation in points. Heise was one of nine Gophers to play in all 39 games.

Ostertag will also wear the 'C' for the first time after serving as an assistant captain last season. The defender from Shakopee, Minn., scored a career-high four goals last season, including three on the power-play, before suffering a season-ending injury after 14 games.

Boreen will wear a letter for the first time in her career after a breakout senior season in 2021-22. The right-handed forward finished third in the nation and second on the Gophers with 59 points on her way to being named All-WCHA Second Team and WCHA All-Tournament Team. Boreen was one of nine Gophers to play in all 39 games.

The Gophers return 20 players from last year's team, which finished fourth in the final USCHO poll. Minnesota returns nine of its top ten leading scorers from a year ago led by Heise, Boreen, and Catie Skaja. Zumwinkle and Abbey Murphy, the program's top-two scorers from the 2020-21 season are also back.
