Lexy Ramler, Ona Loper named Co-Most Valuable Performers
The University of Minnesota gymnastics program held its annual team banquet on Saturday where they celebrated the 2022 season and handed out postseason awards.Â
Minnesota's season was highlighted by individual and team accolades and ended with a sixth place finish – the best in program history – at the NCAA Championships. The Gophers featured NCAA All-Americans Lexy Ramler, Ona Loper, Mya Hooten and Hannah Willmarth this year and also broke 198 as a team for the first time ever.Â
Ramler was named a finalist for the Honda Sport Award, while Loper was a finalist for the prestigious AAI Award. Minnesota recorded its six highest team floor scores ever this year and the three different individuals – Hooten, Loper and Ramler – combined to record six perfect 10s this past season.Â
Minnesota's banquet was held at Huntington Bank Stadium and plenty of awards were passed out as the Gophers closed the chapter on its most historic season ever.Â
The coaching staff handed out six awards at the banquet:
Co-Most Valuable Performer: Lexy Ramler and Ona Loper
Freshman of the Year: Marissa Jencks
Co-Most Improved: Gianna Gerdes and Emily Koch
Co-Teammates of the Year: Abbie Nylin and Mya Hooten
Mariam Award: Halle Remlinger and Hannah Willmarth
This award is named after Mariam Pourshoushtari, a former Gopher gymnast who survived meningitis. Her perseverance is a testament to what it means to dedicate all of your personal resources and willpower to achieve something. This honor is given to the gymnasts who the coaches believe has done everything they can to be their very best.
Visionary Leadership Award: Ella Sirjord
This is a new award this year, and is being presented because the past few years have showcased some incredible out-of-the-gym talents from members of the program. Starting with Mary Korlin-Downs and continuing with Ella Sirjord, the vibrant brand of the team has come to life with extraordinary vision, compelling content and dynamic storytelling.Â
