The Iowa State transfer has three years of eligibility
MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota gymnastics program has announced the addition of Frédérique Sgarbossa to its signing class of 2026, head coach Jenny Hansen announced Thursday. She joins an incoming class of four freshmen heading to Dinkytown this summer.
Sgarbossa comes to Minnesota as a transfer from Iowa State, where she competed as a freshman in 2025 and again this season before their season was canceled after just five meets.
"We are thrilled to welcome Frédérique to the University of Minnesota," said head coach Jenny Hansen. "Coming from Iowa State, she brings valuable all-around experience and the ability to contribute immediately on every event. Beyond her talent in the gym, she is a tremendous student and an outstanding person who aligns perfectly with the culture we've built here. We're excited to see the impact she'll make the moment she arrives on campus."

An all-around gymnast from Gatineau, Quebec, Canada, Frédérique Sgarbossa comes to Minnesota as a transfer from Iowa State University. She will enroll in classes in June and start training with the team in preparation for the 2027 season. She will have three seasons of eligibility at the 'U', beginning this January. She holds career-bests of 9.875 on vault and beam, 9.900 on bars, and 9.800 on the floor.
"I chose Minnesota because from the moment I stepped on campus, I immediately felt a sense of belonging, and the team culture was exactly what I had been searching for," Sgarbossa said. "The connection I felt with the coaches made me confident that this is a place where I can continue to grow. I truly believe I can thrive both academically and athletically at Minnesota. The campus and facilities helped me picture myself there so easily. Most of all, I'm excited to be part of a program that carries a national championship mindset and pushes me to be my best everyday!"
In her freshman year at ISU, she was a mainstay on bars for ISU but also competed on vault and beam. She had the team's highest bars score of the year at 9.900. Sgarbossa was named to the Big 12 All-Freshman Team, Big 12 Academic All-Rookie Team and to the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll twice. She collected three event titles, all on bars, and had a team-high score on bars in 10 of the 13 meets.
This past season, she competed in all five meets, holding a best bars score of 9.850 and top beam and floor scores of 9.800. Sgarbossa was named to the Big 12 All-Academic Team this past school year.
Prior to college, she made the Canadian National team in 2023-2024 and was the alternate for the World Championships in 2023. Sgarbossa was on the 2023 Pan American Games team and helped the squad to a third place finish as a team. She placed third on floor at the 2024 Olympic Trials and was eighth in the all-around. Sgarbossa was the 2023 Canada Games all-around champion while finishing third on vault and second with the team.
She was coached by Katerine Dussault, Francine Bouffard and Pierre Privé. After graduating high school in 2022, she spent the 2022-23 season at Felix Leclerc college. She deferred her first year to 2024, spending 2023-24 chasing her dreams in hopes of representing Canada in the 2024 Olympic Games.
The daughter of Stéphane Sgarbossa and Julie de Brienne, Fred has an older sister, Sabrina. Her mother played soccer in college. Sgarbossa plans on majoring in kinesiology at the 'U'.
"My goal when I get to Minnesota is to continue developing as an all-around athlete. I want to keep improving on every event while also adjusting quickly and contributing to the team's success however I can. It's important to me to build strong connections with my teammates and be someone they can rely on. After Minnesota's historic season, making it back to Nationals and competing for a National Championship again is definitely something I want to achieve. I'm excited to put in the work to help make that happen!"
