MINNEAPOLIS - Golden Gophers commit Sydney Schwartz earned the distinction of being the top softball player in the state when she was named 2022 PlayBall! Minnesota Ms. Softball in a special ceremony at Target Field Sunday.

The Victoria, Minn., native will begin her collegiate tenure in the fall following a brilliant prep career at Chanhassen High School. She also was named the Gatorade Minnesota Softball Player of the Year in both 2021 and 2022 and Star Tribune Metro Player of the Year as a senior this season.

She excelled on both defense and offense during the 2022 campaign tying for the most wins by any pitcher in the state (21) and struck out 225 opposing batters. Schwartz recorded a 1.42 ERA, allowing only 30 earned runs, in 148.1 innings of work in the circle, while providing a .565 batting average and 13 home runs. She led the Storm to back-to-back section titles and appearances at the state tournament and accumulated more than 600 career strikeouts.

Schwartz is the sixth winner of the award that has gone on to join the Maroon and Gold along with Emily Hansen (2018), Katelyn Kemmetmueller (2016), Erika Rozell (2014), Nikki Anderson (2012) and Sara Moulton (2010).

Play Ball! Minnesota is an initiative of the Minnesota Twins Community Fund; it was organized in 2004 in collaboration with Minnesota youth baseball and softball organizations to promote and improve the sports in the Upper Midwest.

In 2010, the Minnesota Minute Men and Play Ball! Minnesota began honoring the top Minnesota high school senior athlete in baseball and softball. Originally called the Mr. Baseball and Ms. Softball Award, the award was re-named the Play Ball! Minnesota Mr. Baseball and Ms. Softball Award in 2012 to recognize the support from Play Ball! Minnesota.
