Minnesota to Face Wake Forest in B1G/ACC Challenge

MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota women's basketball team will host Wake Forest on Wednesday Nov. 30, as part of the 2022 Big Ten/ACC Women's Basketball Challenge, it was announced Monday. Game time and television coverage will be announced at a later date.
The Golden Gophers are 6-8 all-time in the event, which is now in its 15th year, including a 4-3 record at home. Minnesota is 2-1 in the last three events, =Â beating then-No. 12 Syracuse at Williams Arena in 2018, 72-68, then going on the road in 2019 to grab a 75-67 victory over Notre Dame before falling to eventual NCAA Tournament team North Carolina last season.Â
Minnesota and Wake Forest have met twice previously. Minnesota is 1-1 against the Demon Deacons with the last meeting coming in 2017 at the Lady Rebel Round Up in Las Vegas, a game that the Maroon and Gold won 93-81. Minnesota's loss to Wake Forest came back in 2011 in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge in Winston-Salem.Â
Minnesota is coming off an 15-18 season (7-11 in Big Ten play). The team returns three members from last year's squad and brings in nine newcomers which includes the No. 10 nationally ranked recruiting class, according to ESPN. Those freshmen include Miss Minnesota Basketball Amaya Battle (Hopkins, Minn.), Mara Braun (Wayzata, Minn.), Mallory Heyer (Chaska, Minn.) and Niamya Holloway (Eden Prairie, Minn.).Â
Wake Forest was 16-17 overall last year with a 4-14 mark in the ACC. The Demon Deacons played in the WNIT, reaching the second round. Wake Forest last reached the NCAA Tournament in 2020-21 when the team finished 12-12 in the regular season before falling in the opening round to Oklahoma State to finish 12-13 overall. Junior guard Jewel Spear returns as the ACC's leading scoring from last season at 18.3 points per game, and was named to the ACC's First Team highlighted by her 40-point performance last year against ETSU. The team also returns sophomore Elise Williams who averaged 9.5 points per game and led the team in assists (87) and steals (51).Â
