MINNEAPOLIS – Gophers right-handed pitcher J.P. Massey (Chicago, Ill. / Gwendolyn Brooks College Prep) was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates with the 200th overall pick in the seventh round of the 2022 MLB Draft on Monday afternoon.

In the last 10 years of Gopher baseball, Max Meyer (No. 3 overall, 2020) and Tom Windle (No. 56 overall, 2013) are the only Minnesota pitchers to be drafted higher than Massey.

The 6-foot-5 Saturday starter for Minnesota made 14 appearances (12 starts) in 2022, striking out 63 batters. He allowed 43 earned runs in 59.1 innings of work. His performance against Kansas on March 5 earned him a spot on the Cambria College Classic All-Tournament Team after he punched out eight batters, allowing just five hits and one earned run in 6.2 innings. He went six-or-more innings four times this past season, and tallied five-or-more strikeouts eight times.

A two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, Massey was ranked as a top 10 B1G pitching prospect by D1Baseball heading into the 2022 season. For his career, he made 43 appearances (22 starts), striking out 140 hitters in 123.2 innings pitched.

Massey being drafted means the University of Minnesota has had players drafted in a Big Ten record 35 consecutive seasons dating back to 1988. No other Big Ten program has a draft streak longer than 11 years.
