Eight Gophers Named to National Team Rosters Ahead of Women's Worlds

The 2022 IIHF Women's World Championship runs from Aug. 25 - Sept. 4 in Denmark.
MINNEAPOLIS – Eight players and three staff members with Golden Gopher women's hockey ties are among the athletes named to national team rosters ahead of the 2022 IIHF Women's World Championship in Herning and Frederikshavn, Denmark. The 'U' will be represented on three of the ten teams in the tournament after athletes were named to the United States, Finland and Sweden national teams over the past week. The tournament will run from Aug. 25 – Sept. 4 with the United States kicking off action against Japan at 8:00 a.m. CT on Aug. 25.
Fifth-year players Taylor Heise and Grace Zumwinkle and Gopher alumnae Hannah Brandt ('16), Amanda Kessel ('16), Kelly Pannek ('19) and Lee Stecklein ('17) were selected to represent the Red, White and Blue. Zumwinkle and the four Minnesota alumnae each earned silver with Team USA at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China.
Incoming freshman Josefin Bouveng, who represented Sweden at the 2022 Winter Olympics, was named to the Swedish national team on Thursday. She is the first player to hail from Sweden in program history. The left-handed forward from Vassunda, Sweden most recently played for Brynäs IF in the Swedish Women's Hockey League (SDHL), where she recorded 24 goals and 22 assists in 28 games during the 2021-22 season. Over five seasons in the SDHL, Bouveng tallied 143 points (76g-67a) through 149 games.
Incoming freshman Nelli Laitinen, who won bronze with Team Finland at the 2022 Winter Olympics, was named to the Finnish national team on Wednesday. The left-handed defender from Lohja, Finland most recently played for Kiekko-Espoo in the Naisten Liiga, where she won two Finnish championships. Through 116 career games in the Naisten Liiga, Laitinen recorded 141 points including 41 goals and 100 assists. The 2022 IIHF Women's World Championship will be Laitinen's third with Team Finland after representing the Lions in 2019 (silver) and 2021 (bronze). She has tallied a goal and an assist in 14 career games at the world championships.
In addition to the senior national team, USA Hockey has also announced the roster for the Collegiate Select Team, which will play a three-game series against Canada on Aug. 17, 18 and 20. 2022 Olympian Abbey Murphy and senior Madeline Wethington were among 23 named to the roster.
Joining the athletes in Denmark are three current Gopher staff members which will also represent USA Hockey. Cal Dietz (Strength and Conditioning Head Coach), Brent Proulx (Equipment Manager) and Jess Scott (Hockey Operations) are among the members of the decorated Team USA staff.
