Cooley, Faber, Knies combined for 11 points in five games
EDMONTON - The United States, defending gold medalists, ended its run for a repeat at the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship Wednesday at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta. Logan Cooley, Brock Faber and Matthew Knies all represented the University of Minnesota on Team USA and combined for 11 points in five games.
After getting out to a blazing start to the tournament, going a perfect 4-0 in the preliminary round where they outscored the opposition by a 22-4 margin, the Americans were unable to sustain the momentum into the knockout stage. Despite taking a 1-0 lead in the first period against Czechia Wednesday in the quarterfinals on a goal from Cooley, the U.S. allowed three-straight tallies before falling 4-2.
Serving as team captain, Faber scored a goal and had an assist for two points in five games. His +10 rating led the U.S. and was tied for the second-best of all participants following the quarterfinal round. Both of his points came in the win against Switzerland with his second-period goal serving as the game-winning goal.
Minnesota associate head coach Steve Miller served as an assistant coach for Team USA along with former Gophers captain Grant Potulny, who currently is the head coach at Northern Michigan.
Originally, the tournament was scheduled for Edmonton and Red Deer, Alberta, from Dec. 26- Jan. 5, 2022. Due to the spread of COVID-19 and the Omicron variant, the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship was cancelled to ensure the health and safety of all participants and moved to August 2022.
