Gophers Sweep Badgers in B1G Home Opener

It's Minnesota's first sweep over UW since 2018
MINNEAPOLIS --Â The No. 8 University of Minnesota volleyball team took down the No. 6 Wisconsin Badgers in three sets, 25-21, 25-16, 29-27 on Sunday night at Maturi Pavilion.
Taylor Landfair led Minnesota with 17Â kills while Mckenna Wucherer had nine kills and four blocks. Melani Shaffmaster paced the offense with 30Â assists and eight digs.
"We followed our scouting report the entire match and everyone executed at a really high level," Landfair said. "After the Purdue loss, we came back and had a great practice this morning and never got too down on ourselves. We just told ourselves we were going to get better, focus on us and just try to win the next point."
As a team, Minnesota (6-4, 1-1 Big Ten) hit .356 with 43 kills, had 11 team blocks, 35 digs and four aces. Wisconsin (7-3, 1-1 Big Ten) hit .204 with 42 kills, had five team blocks, 26 digs and six aces.
Sarah Franklin led Wisconsin with 14 kills.

Set 1: Minnesota took a 4-1 lead early after getting kills from Mckenna Wucherer and Taylor Landfair and a block from Jenna Wenaas and Ellie Husemann. A 3-0 Wisconsin run would tie it at 4-4. No team led by more than one up until the 10-10 mark, when a 5-1 run by the Badgers allowed them to take a 15-11 lead into the media timeout. The Gophers cut it back to one after three straight points, including an ace from Elise McGhie and a kill from Carter Booth to make it 15-14. An ace from Jenna Wenaas and a block from Booth and Melani Shaffmaster gave Minnesota its first lead since 9-8 at 17-16. UW would take the lead back at 19-18 after a kill and an ace, but an ensuing 3-1 Gophers run put the home team up 22-20 and forced the Badgers into a timeout. Wucherer tallied her third kill of the set in the spurt. A block from Wucherer and Husemann, a service error from UW and an ace from Rachel Kilkelly ended the set with a 25-21 Minnesota victory. Wucherer led the team with three kills and Husemann totaled four blocks as the 'U' registered five as a team.
Set 2: The two teams split the first eight points before a 3-1 Minnesota run gave the Gophers a 7-5 lead. Landfair tallied a pair of kills in the push. The Badgers would tie it up at seven but a service error, setting error and Landfair kill put the 'U' up three at 10-7 and forced a UW timeout. The Gophers would go up five at 12-7 after a block from Wucherer and Husemann and a kill from Wucherer. A 3-0 Badgers run cut it to 12-10 before an attacking error by UW and a kill from Wucherer put Minnesota back up four. Kills from Wucherer and Landfair and Wucherer helped the home team extend its lead to five once again at 16-11, forcing the Badgers into another timeout. Minnesota kept its run going after the break, scoring three of the next four to go up 19-12. An ace from Kilkelly and a kill from Landfair kept the fun going. Wisconsin would get no closer than seven the rest of the way as Minnesota closed out set two, 25-16. Landfair led the 'U' with seven kills on the set as the Gophers hit .400 compared to .118 for UW. Wucherer also tallied four kills in the set.

The Badgers would respond, however, scoring six of the next eight to take a 13-11 lead. UW's Sarah Franklin registered three aces in-a-row to put the visitors up a pair and force a Gophers timeout. The Gophers would cut it to one at 14-13, but the Badgers scored five of the next seven to take a 19-15 lead and force a Minnesota timeout. The Gophers would cut it to two at 21-19 after getting a kill from Landfair, a block from Landfair and Booth and a pair of UW errors. The Badgers called their first timeout of the set. The Gophers would eventually tie it up at 24, 25, 26 and 27 before having a set point opportunity at 28-27. After a back-and-forth rally, Shaffmaster finished off the match with a kill on an overpass as Minnesota took a 29-27 win in set three.

-Minnesota is now 53-36 all-time against Wisconsin, including a 12-9 record under Hugh.
-The Gophers are 11-0 in Big Ten home openers under Hugh.
