MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 7 University of Minnesota volleyball team fell to the Northwestern Wildcats in five sets, 22-25, 25-21, 25-17, 20-25, 13-15 on Wednesday night at Maturi Pavilion.
Jenna Wenaas led Minnesota with an all-around performance, going for 12 kills, seven blocks (career-high) and 18 digs (season-high). Taylor Landfair and Mckenna Wucherer paced the offense with 16 kills.
As a team, Minnesota (6-5, 1-2 Big Ten) hit .216 with 60 kills, 15 team blocks, 69 digs and four aces. Northwestern (12-3, 1-2 Big Ten) hit .167 with 63 kills, 12 team blocks, 77 digs and six aces.
Temi Thomas-Ailara led Northwestern with 17 kills.
Set Breakdown:
Set 1: Minnesota started off the match with two blocks and a 4-0 run before Northwestern charged back to tie it up at 6-6. After that, a 4-1 run gave the Gophers a 10-7 lead. A block from Carter Booth and Melani Shaffmaster and kills from Jenna Wenaas and Mckenna Wucherer charged the spurt. The Gophers would go up 12-9 before a 4-1 Wildcats run tied the set up at 13-13. Minnesota would head into the television timeout with a 15-14 lead after kills from Taylor Landfair and Booth. A 4-1 NU run after the break put the visitors up 18-16 and forced a timeout from coach McCutcheon. The Wildcats kept a steady two-to-three point lead until 11-8, when a 4-0 Gophers run gave the home team back the lead and forced an NU timeout. NU tied it up at 12 but the Gophers responded with three more points off a block from Husemann and Wenaas and kills from Landfair and Wenaas. NU called timeout No. 2 trailing 15-12. Minnesota would extend its lead out to six at 20-14 after kills from Booth, Landfair and Wucherer, but a 3-0 NU run cut the lead back to three. The Wildcats would cut it to two at 21-19, forcing a Gophers timeout, their second of the set. Minnesota would let its opposition get no closer the rest of the way, pulling away to win, 25-21. Elise McGhie ended the set with her second ace of the match. Minnesota hit .209 for the set compared to .102 for NU.
