Two First Half Goals Lead Gophers to Third-Straight Win

9/8/2022 8:46:00 PM | Soccer

MINNEAPOLIS – A pair of back-to-back first half goals led the University of Minnesota soccer team (3-3-1, 0-0-0 Big Ten) to a 2-0 win over Omaha (1-4-2, 0-0-0 Summit League) on Thursday night at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.

The victory marks Minnesota third-straight win and keeps it undefeated, 2-0-1, over the Mavericks.

The Golden Gophers led in all offensive stat categories including a season high of 23 shots compared to Omaha's one. Minnesota saw the back of the net twice, while they had 10 chances on frame.

Senior forward Izzy Brown led the offensive push tallying six shots, followed by sophomore forward Khyah Harper who had three and one assist.

The Maroon and Gold's backline made strong defensive and offensive statements. While allowing only one shot and two corners, graduate Gabbie Cesarone had three shots, and netted the opening goal. Junior Abi Frandsen also notched three while graduate Delaney Stekr's lone chance was on frame.

With the clean sheet, senior goalkeeper Megan Plaschko picked up one save and her second shutout of the year.

"Our group came out well, we were on the front foot right away," said head coach Erin Chastain. "We got corners and chances. I'm happy to win 2-0, but I think we left some goals on the table in the second half. Happy we could have the rotation we did, and that depth will pay dividend for us going forward and into Sunday."

Both Gophers' goals came during the first half, as Cesarone used her head to score off Harper's corner kick at the seven-minute mark. Plaschko's single save came 22 minutes later.

With 14 minutes remaining in the first 45, Megan Gray laid a pass to Sophia Boman who bent it to the left side netting, giving Minnesota a 2-0 advantage.

Despite a scoreless second half, the Gophers' offensive mindset continued. Totaling 10 shots and four on frame. Both of Omaha's corner kicks came during the final 12 minutes.

The Golden Gophers will return to Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium for their final non-conference contest on Sunday at 1 p.m., against Big East foe Marquette. The match will be streamed live on B1G+.
