SERIES HISTORY – OMAHA
Thursday's match marks the third time the Golden Gophers and Mavericks have faced off. Minnesota is undefeated in the series, 1-0-1, and has never traveled to Omaha. During last season's draw, the Maroon and Gold led the Mavericks in shots, 18(6)-11(5). The match went into double overtime, as both teams went scoreless.
Prior to 2021, the two teams competed back in 2015 as the Gophers came out victorious in a 9-1 win at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium. Minnesota scored seven goals in the first half alone, while the remaining two came in the second 45 minutes.
SERIES HISTORY – MARQUETTE
Minnesota heads into Sunday's game with a winning 3-2 record over Marquette. This is the fourth time the two teams will meet in Minneapolis.
In their last meeting during the 2019 season, Marquette picked up the 1-0 win and shutout. Prior to 2019, Minnesota saw two-straight wins over the Golden Eagles.
SCOUTING OMAHA
Picked to finish third in the Summit League, Omaha boasts a 1-3-2 record on the 2022 season. Their lone win came over Lindenwood, as Emilie Erland scored the game winning goal. Last weekend, they received a pair of losses against Northern Colorado and No. 20 Colorado. The Mavericks tallied 14 shots on the weekend.
Omaha is led offensively by Cece Behrens who has dished out seven shots and one goal in 439 minutes this season. Goalkeeper Mia Reedtz Rehde Olesen has started all six matches for the Mavericks. So far this season, she's stopped 18 shots in 468 minutes.
SCOUTING MARQUETTE
The Golden Eagles will compete head-to-head against St. Thomas prior to their match against the Golden Gophers. They're 2-2-1 this season with wins over Central Michigan and Green Bay. Against the Phoenix, they had five players score five goals, winning 5-0.
Forward Kate Gibson and Isabella Cook look to pepper Minnesota's backline on Sunday. Each have a goal on the season while Gibson notched nine shots (seven on goal) and scored against Green Bay. Cook, a transfer from Tennessee, has seven shots this season and scored the game winning goal against Central Michigan.
Notably, Josie Bieda received Big East Freshman of the Week nods on Monday for scoring the game-tying goal against UIC. Bieda had three shots over the weekend, two came against Green Bay.
LAST SERIES RECAP
In its last series, Minnesota picked up a shutout and deuce of wins over Drake and North Dakota. Against the Bulldogs, the Gophers finished four goals and collected its first clean sheet of the season. The Maroon and Gold backline allowed only one shot on goal throughout the 90 minutes.
Following the win, the Gophers traveled to Grand Forks, N.D. for a Sunday match up with the Fighting Hawks. With their second win of the season, comes the third-straight victory they've had over North Dakota.
GOALS GALORE
Minnesota's offensive flare was shown during both matches. Four Gophers scored, while Izzy Brown clinched her first career hat trick against Drake as well as assisting Alana Dressely's game winning goal against North Dakota. Brown's hat trick is the first at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium since Sydney Squires scored three goals against Iowa State in 2017.
Junior transfer Sophia Romine made her mark against the Fighting Hawks, scoring two goals to secure the win for the Gophers. Her brace is the first since McKenna Buisman's last season against Illinois. Christa VanLoon, alongside Dressely, also scored over the weekend. VanLoon had the second goal against the Bulldogs.
