Gophers Tripped Up by Rutgers at Home
1/12/2023 8:20:00 PM | Women's Basketball
MINNEAPOLIS (Jan. 12, 2023) – The University of Minnesota (8-9, 1-5 B1G) women's basketball team dropped a 65-59 contest to Rutgers (8-10, 2-4 B1G) at Williams Arena on Thursday night. Freshman Mallory Heyer scored 18 points while sophomore Alanna 'Rose' Micheaux secured her fifth double double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.Â
Heyer's 18 points came on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor with the freshman adding seven boards and three assists in 32 minutes. Micheaux's double double was on 7-of-13 from the floor and her 10 rebounds included eight on the offensive end. Micheaux's eight offensive rebounds are tied for the third-most offensive rebounds in a single game under head coach Lindsay Whalen (since 2018).Â
The Gophers defense set the tone in the opening quarter allowing just nine points, marking just the sixth time this season the Gophers have allowed single digits in any quarter. Minnesota's offense was paced by Heyer who scored seven of the first 11 points for the Maroon and Gold and helped the hosts lead 13-9 after 10 minutes at the Barn.Â
In the second quarter the two teams were evenly matched throughout with the Gophers holding the slight edge at 13-12 to extend their lead into the locker room. At the break the Gophers had seven different players score, including back-to-back buckets from Angelina Hammond, giving the team a 26-21 lead at halftime.Â
The Rutgers' attack on the Gophers interior defense started in the third quarter with the Scarlet Knights scoring 20 of their 22 points in the quarter inside the painted area. The Gophers managed to score 15 in the quarter and kept the game at just a two-point deficit heading into the fourth quarter.Â
The Scarlet Knights continued to power their way inside in the final quarter, matching their 22 points with 22 more in the final 10 minutes at the Barn. Minnesota was able to regain the lead with 3:42 to go on a Heyer triple, but an immediate answer from Rutgers tied the game. In the final 1:45 Rutgers outscored Minnesota 9-3, with seven of those points coming at the charity stripe, to take the road win back to Piscataway.Â
As a team the Maroon and Gold shot 35.6 percent (21-of-59) from the floor and hit five threes as a team. The Gophers secured 21 offensive rebounds, and out rebounded the Scarlet Knights 40-32 but committed 20 turnovers that led to 20 Rutgers points.Â

Game Notes: Minnesota's 21 offensive rebounds are the most the team has had in a Big Ten game this season and the most since the team had 22 against Penn State last season (Feb. 27, 2022)... Micheaux has now scored in double figures in seven straight games... Angelina Hammond's two field goals were the first for the graduate transfer against a Big Ten opponent... Heyer has made at least one three in 11 straight games, which is tied for the longest streak on the team this season (Braun - 11 games).
