Gophers Set to Host No. 3 Purdue Thursday

STARTING FIVE
• The University of Minnesota men's basketball team is home for the second-straight game, this time as No. 3 Purdue visits Williams Arena Thursday night. The Golden Gophers are 81-99 all-time against the Boilermakers and 53-33 on Minnesota's home court. The last time the Golden Gophers defeated Purdue dates back to Feb. 11, 2021 in a 71-68 victory, also at Williams Arena.
• Thursday's game marks the second time the Golden Gophers will face Purdue already this season seven conference games into the year. By mid January, the Gophers will have had played Purdue twice before playing seven conference teams for the first time this season. Minnesota also plays Michigan on Sunday, an opponent it saw on Dec. 8 in Minneapolis.
• The Gophers are coming off a 78-60 loss to Illinois Monday night. Dawson Garcia led Minnesota with 17 points and Ta'Lon Cooper added 16. The Illini held a narrow 35-32 lead at the half. The Gophers opened the second half by scoring the first four points for a 36-35 edge, but Illinois responded with a 12-0 run and maintained the lead en route to its fourth-straight victory.
• Dawson Garcia finished the Illinois game Monday with a team-high 17 points. It marked his eighth-straight double-figure scoring output (14th this season), and added six rebounds. Garcia was 6-of-14 from the field, including 1-of-3 from three-point range, and 4-of-6 at the free throw line. He also had four assists and a steal in 37 minutes. Over his past four games, Garcia has averaged 19.5 points and 9.8 rebounds per game.
• Ta'Lon Cooper recorded his fourth-straight game in double-figures, as he made 7-of-11 field goals and finished with 16 points to go with three rebounds and three assists. Cooper's season-high is 10 assists versus Western Michigan on Nov. 7, and he has registered six or more assists in nine games this season. Cooper was also honored prior to Monday's game for registering over 500 career assists, now sitting at 504 between his time at Minnesota and Morehead State. Cooper entered the Purdue game ranked 10th nationally and third in the Big Ten at 6.1 assists per game.
ABOUT PURDUE
• Purdue holds the best record in the Big Ten entering the Minnesota game with a 17-1 overall record and 6-1 in conference play. The Boilermakers' only loss came in a 65-64 contest to Rutgers in West Lafayette, Ind. The Boilermakers are on the road for the second-straight game and four of their last five. Purdue won 64-63 at Michigan State Monday when Zach Edey scored with 2.2 seconds left for the gamewinner.
• Preseason All-Big Ten selection Edey leads the Boilermakers averaging 21.9 points and 13.4 rebounds and ranks first in the Big Ten in both categories. He has 15 double doubles this year, also a conference best and second in the nation. Fletcher Loyer, the reigning Big Ten Co-Player and Freshman of the Week averages 13.4 points in 18 starts, while Braden Smith follows with 9.4 points and a team-high 74 assists.
• As a team, Purdue averages 75.11 points per game, while allowing just 61.22 to its opponents. The Boilermakers are shooting 45.7 from the field, including 32.8 past the arc and 76.2 percent from the free throw line. They also average 39.8 rebounds, a Big Ten high.
THE LAST TIME
• Purdue, ranked No. 5 at the time, defeated the Gophers 89-70 in the Big Ten-opener for each team at Mackey Arena on Dec. 4, 2022. Jamison Battle led Minnesota with a season-high 21 points, Ta'Lon Cooper had 15 points and eight assists, and Joshua Ola-Joseph had 10 points. Braeden Carrington added nine points and six rebounds in 29 minutes for the Gophers.
• Minnesota was without the Treyton Thompson who missed the game with an illness. Dawson Garcia was also coming off an illness in that game as well.

• Minnesota held a team grade point average of 3.23 last semester. It was the third-straight semester the Gophers have held a 3.0 team GPA, all of which coming during Coach Johnson's tenure.
• Last year, Minnesota had three Academic All-Big Ten selections, while the team earned the NABC Team Academic Excellence Award. Minnesota also had nine earn degrees last season.
