First-career honor for the senior
ROSEMONT, Ill. - After leading the Minnesota men's hockey team with four points in last weekend's home series, Jackson LaCombe was named the Big Ten Conference First Star of the Week.
The Eden Prairie, Minn., native matched his career-best outing with a three-point performance Friday night against No. 8/7 Michigan. He delivered the game-tying goal in the final five minutes of regulation and added an assist on Matthew Knies' overtime winner. It was the senior's first game this season with three points and fourth of his tenure with the Golden Gophers.
LaCombe, a nominee for the 2023 Hobey Baker Memorial Award, followed that performance by recording an assist late in the third period Saturday night as the Maroon and Gold battled back to force overtime. He now has tallied a point in 18 of 26 games played this year and currently leads all B1G defensemen in scoring and ranks second nationally for blue liners behind 25 points (six goals, 19 assists).
It's the first B1G weekly award in LaCombe's career, while he is the fifth different player to earn a First Star from the conference along with Logan Cooley (Oct. 4 and Dec. 13), Jimmy Snuggerud (Oct. 11), Luke Mittelstadt (Nov. 22) and Justen Close (Dec. 6). Six Gophers have been named a B1G Star of the Week for a total of 11 honors this season.
