1/28/2023 1:43:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Jamison Battle led the University of Minnesota with 20 points and Ta'Lon Cooper added 12 points and five assists, but Northwestern (15-5, 6-3 B1G) recorded an 81-61 win over the Golden Gophers (7-13, 1-9 B1G) Saturday at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
The Gophers jumped out to early leads of 7-2 and 11-7, but Northwestern used an 11-0 run to build an 18-11 lead that soon grew to double-digits. Four points from Treyton Thompson pulled Minnesota within eight at 23-15, and Battle's three-pointer cut it to 27-18 with 6:43 on the clock, but the Wildcats went on a 9-0 run to stretch it to 36-18 on the way to a 45-28 halftime advantage. Battle led the Gophers with nine points at the half. The Wildcats were able to maintain their lead throughout the second half to record their third-straight win. Will Ramberg finished with a career-high eight points and led the Gophers with seven rebounds in a reserve role.
Battle finished with a team-high 20 points for the second consecutive game, his fourth 20-point game this season and his 76th career game reaching double-figures. He was 7-of-12 from the field, including 2-of-5 from beyond the arc, and he added three rebounds and two assists in 38 minutes. Battle has reached double-figures 39 times at Minnesota.
Minnesota was limited to eight players in the game, as the Gophers were without leading scorer and rebounder Dawson Garcia and guard Braeden Carrington. Pharrel Payne returned to the Gopher lineup after missing the Indiana game and made his first collegiate start.
Minnesota is back on the road when it travels to Rutgers, Wednesday, Feb. 1. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. CT. The contest can be found on BIg Ten Network and KFAN 100.3 FM.
