Buckeyes Comeback to Take Down Gophers

1/5/2023 7:49:00 PM | Women's Basketball

MINNEAPOLIS (Jan. 5, 2023) – The University of Minnesota (8-7, 1-3 B1G) fell to No. 3/3 Ohio State (16-0, 5-0 B1G) 83-71 in a conference matchup at Williams Arena on Thursday night. Mallory Heyer led the way with 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Maroon and Gold while Taylor Mikesell led the way for Ohio State with 22 points.

The biggest turning point in the game came in the final quarter of play on Thursday with the Buckeyes outscoring the Gophers 28-10 in the final 10 minutes of play after Minnesota entered the fourth quarter with a six-point lead. Ohio State shot 9-of-13 in the final quarter while Minnesota shot just 3-of-15.

Heyer's 15-point, 12-rebound double double is the third on the season for the true freshman. The Chaska, Minn., native brought down four offensive rebounds in her effort and added three assists and one steal. Amaya Battle joined her fellow freshman with an impressive stat line of 14 points, nine rebounds, three blocks and two assists on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor. The final two Gophers in double figures against Ohio State were Rose Micheaux (14) and Mara Braun (12).

The opening quarter began with Ohio State racing out to a 7-0 lead on the hosts, but a Minnesota 8-2 run quickly closed the gap at the 4:19 mark of the first. Ohio State quickly regrouped and extended their early lead to 10 points, but Minnesota captured momentum at the end of the quarter by scoring the final five points to make it 24-19.

The second quarter saw that momentum continue for the Maroon and Gold, with the team finally taking the lead for the first time in the game on a Braun steal and score to make the game 30-29. During that run Braun scored eight straight for the Gophers and helped lead an 8-2 run to end the half, giving Minnesota a 43-39 lead into the locker room.

The third quarter was a back-and-forth affair with big runs by both teams. Minnesota started it off with an 11-2 run to take a 10-point lead with 3:58 to go, but Ohio State responded with an 8-0 run of their own to cut it to just two with 2:30 left in the third. The quarter ended on a high note for the hosts, with Heyer hitting her only three of the game to take a six-point lead into the final quarter.

The final quarter proved to be Minnesota's downfall with Ohio State's 14-0 run to begin the quarter to take an eight-point lead with 6:59 to go. Minnesota would continue to fight, but could not get closer than six the rest of the way.

For the game Minnesota shot 28-of-71 (39.4 percent) while allowing Ohio State to shoot 29-of-64 (45.3 percent). The Gophers had a rebound advantage of 36-32 heading into the fourth quarter by a 13-4 rebound advantage for the Buckeyes allowed the visitors to out rebound Minnesota 45-40 for the game.

Game Notes: Mallory Heyer's 12 rebounds are a career high... Thursday's loss is the first of the season (4-1) when the Gophers lead when entering the fourth quarter (56-11 under Whalen)... Ohio State's 28 points in the fourth quarter are the most the Gophers have given up in the final quarter this season (previous high was 25 vs. NDSU)... Katie Borowicz's five-steal performance is her fifth of the season.
